From the heart of Italy to the Bay Area, Almare Gelato is redefining the gelato experience. Founded by Alberto Malvestio in 2008, inspired by his great uncle's legendary gelato recipes, the company began as a small operation in Berkeley. In 2012, Simone Arpaio joined as co-owner, bringing fresh ideas and energy that propelled Almare into the wholesale market, supplying some of the best restaurants from Palo Alto to Sacramento. Today, they continue to craft traditional Italian gelato every morning, with signature flavors like toasted almond and caramelized figs, lavender and fresh blueberries, and more. oaklandside.org+10berkeleyside.org+10discoveredinberkeley.com+10🎧...

Davisville, April 28, 2025: Yolo Local has a question for you -- 'What do you need to know?'
Last year’s idea for a new “civic information hub” in Yolo County has grown into Yolo Local, a budding project to create a new source for local information and news. This spring the project is surveying people throughout the county to get insights on the types of information people want to access about local civic life and events, but don’t necessarily know where to find as the old ways of distributing information and news continue to fragment. Today on Davisville we hear an update about the project from Autumn Labbe-Renault, the executive director of Davis Media Ac...

Lee represented Oakland in Congress for nearly 27 years and promised to bring more funding to address the city’s pressing needs. A Rise in Catalytic Converter Thefts
Unless you work on cars for a living, you probably weren’t very familiar with catalytic converters until the last few years, when reported thefts of this particular car part started to skyrocket. It’s part of the exhaust system and contains valuable metals. These thefts have set car owners back thousands of dollars, and some people lose access to their car for months while it’s getting fixed. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed two laws last month in an attempt to address the problem, but whether or not it’ll actually help is up in the air.Gue...

“They insist on being here”: Oakland’s official bird refuses to be moved
A few years ago developers destroyed downtown Oakland’s largest rookery of black-crowned night herons. Workers removed dozens of nests before chopping down the curbside ficus trees where the birds had lived for years. The plan was to relocate them to a grove near Lake Merritt, but the night herons never agreed to this arrangement – and they weren’t tricked by the decoys meant to entice them away from their preferred territory. They simply found other trees in the downtown vicinity where they remain to this day. When Oakland declared the black-crowned night heron the city’s official bird in 2019, the reso...
