Das 1893 in Paris uraufgeführte Drama des belgischen Dichters Maurice Maeterlinck gilt als eines der Hauptwerke des Symbolismus. Die viersätzige Fassung von Gabriel Faurés Orchestersuite op. 80 wurde 1912 uraufgeführt.
Der hier zusätzlich eingefügte Satz, die „Sicilienne“, sollte sich zu einer von Faurés beliebtesten Kompositionen entwickeln und existiert heute in zahlreichen Bearbeitungen. Nach der Premiere und weiteren Aufführungen machte sich der Komponist daran, das musikalische Material des Werkes für eine Orchestersuite umzuarbeiten.
