EP228: What the Bible says and Doesn't Say
In this kickoff episode, we dive into what the Bible does and doesn’t say, especially when it comes to the shape and structure of the world we live in. This is your introduction to biblical cosmology, laying the groundwork for future episodes that will go even deeper. We discuss why it's crucial to study to show thyself approved (2 Timothy 2:15), how to discern truth from deception, and even touch on what truly defines a cult. If you're ready to question mainstream teachings and dig into what Scripture actually reveals, this is the place to start.Melchi...

Timothy Morton ”Hell: A Christian Ecology” pt. 2
Guest/Bio: This week we wrap up our conversation with the incredible Timothy Morton! Tim is a professor and Rita Shea Guffey Chair in English at Rice University. A member of the object-oriented philosophy movement, Morton's work explores the intersection of object-oriented thought and ecological studies. Morton's use of the term 'hyperobjects' was inspired by Björk's 1996 single 'Hyperballad', although the term 'Hyper-objects' (denoting n-dimensional non-local entities) has also been used in computer science since 1967. Morton uses the term to explain objects so massively distributed in time and space as to transcend localization, such as climate change and st...

2 Timothy 1-4, Isaiah 25
In this letter to Timothy, Paul encourages the young man whom he calls a son in the faith to preach the gospel boldly, clearly, unabashedly, and without fear. Paul encourages Timothy to know the Scriptures well so that he can preach the Scriptures well. The apostle has entrusted the work of gospel ministry to Timothy and he wants to make sure that Timothy is capable of training other men to do the same. He reminds his apprentice that those who faithfully preach the gospel of Christ must expect to endure suffering. Paul warns that hard times will come in...

1 Timothy 1-6, Isaiah 22
Today we’re going to read the entire letter of 1 Timothy together, and as we do I think you’ll see some themes emerge. First, Paul writes to Timothy from a place of humility in order to encourage humility within Timothy and within the church. From that humility comes order within the church, including rightly viewed structures of authority and submission. Paul wants Timothy to be bold in faith and in the work of ministry, but humble in spirit, relying on the Lord in every circumstance. Self-righteous gain, however, results in quarreling, craving for controversy, and a love of mone...

Death penalty
I have long been an advocate of the death penalty, but recently I have changed my mind. It just doesn’t make sense to me anymore to take a life to get even for taking a life. To me it is nothing more than trying to achieve vengeance and God instructed us to leave that to Him. Timothy McVeigh’s death did nothing to bring back any of the 168 people that he murdered several years ago. I doubt if the surviving family members got much satisfaction or closure from his death. I’m sure they will continue to mourn their losses...

review of Risking Intimacy by Lauren Levine
Lauren Levine Risking Intimacy and Creative Transformation in Psychoanalysis Note: I had planned to interview Dr. Levine about her book. Leading up to the date we had agreed on, I was struggling with what to talk to her about. Timothy Williamson notes the gladitorial or adversarial nature of philosophical discussion. I certainly had some critical commentary on Dr. Levine's book, but I also prefer to be reparative, as opposed to carpy-suspicious, as a reader (Sedgwick). And it was my sense that in Dr. Levine's particular intellectual culture, sharp-edged criticism can be considered inappropriate, and even lead...

Criminology from a New Perspective: The Psychosocial View
David Gadd and Tony Jefferson wrote the book Psychosocial Criminology. These gentlemen graciously agreed to interview via WebEx and discuss the ideas in the book. Although we had some differences in approach to the fascinating world of criminality, we also shared some common ground on the importance of individual experiences and the complexities involving each case. We went on past the scheduled time, but Tony Jefferson reminded me that none of us are going anywhere, with things as they are, so we continued the discussion a bit longer. Show Highlights: - The distinction of the psychosocial view from a purely...

New Books in Native American Studies
Timothy J. Shannon, “Indian Captive, Indian King: Peter Williamson in America and Britain” (Harvard UP, 2018)
In 1758, Peter Williamson appeared on the streets of Aberdeen, Scotland, dressed as a Native American and telling a remarkable tale. He claimed that as a young boy he had been kidnapped from the city and sold into slavery in America. In performances and in a printed narrative he peddled to his audiences, Williamson described his tribulations as an indentured servant, Indian captive, soldier, and prisoner of war. Aberdeen’s magistrates called him a liar and banished him from the city, but Williamson defended his story. In Indian Captive, Indian King: Peter Williamson in America and Britain (Harvard Un...

For over twenty years he has led a diverse congregation of young professionals that has grown to a weekly attendance of over 5,000. He is...

Ep. 16 - What is Logic? | Dr. Timothy Williamson
Logic has been called many things - "the rules of language", "the rules of reasoning", "the rules of existence", and so on. I want to know what logic is, so I spoke with Dr. Timothy Williamson of Oxford University to help me find out. We cover a ton of great topics - the nature of logic, language, paradoxes, and the metaphysics of concepts and numbers. Ep 6 - ”The Bible” Part 2 w/ Tim Mackie of The Bible Project
Continuing their series on "The Bible", John and Adam spend some time with the brilliant and kind Dr. Timothy Mackie of The Bible Project. Dr. Mackie talks about what the Bible says it is. He focuses mainly on the Old Testament and invites us to consider that perhaps our 21st century, western christian way of approaching The Bible might be wrong. In fact, Dr. Mackie admits that we must be willing to admit at any moment that we could be wrong about all of this. This series is only an intro series. Meant to get some good conversation going...

Ep 3 - Jason Dunlap ”The Road From Dualism”
Special guest host Jason Dunlap takes us on his journey from a Catholic upbringing through atheism to a more expansive, spiritual perspective of reality. We discuss dualistic thinking that keeps us all imprisoned in a narrow, oppressive view of each other. We also touch on topics such as transcendence, eastern mysticism, grace, and the power of presence (not to mention crazy water crystals that teach us about the nature of reality) For a great read on transcending a dualistic frame of thinking: Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life by Richard Rohr http://www.amazon.com...
