The organisers describe the KVK - Kernow Vertical Kilometre as 'a unique challenge; a Kilometre of Vert in Kernow!' Starting at Perranporth Airfield the route takes you up to the top of St Agnes Beacon - you then drop left for a lop of around 1.3 miles before returning to the top of the Beacon and then via several more climbs make your way back to the airfield and the Start /Finish area.At this point you either hand over your ankle timing device to your team mate who runs the second lap or like...

Exe to Axe 2023
It was my birthday on Sunday April 2nd so what better way to celebrate than running the 22 miles of Exe to Axe which starts on the Exmouth seafront and finishes on the Seaton seafront.Organised by Sidmouth Road Runners this is a tough coastal path run which is particularly hard in the second half from Sidmouth. A great sense of achievement when I crossed the finish line. Distance wise this was my 8th longest ever run whilst time wise at 5:18 it was my 3rd longest time after the Classic Quarter, the Classic Quarter relay and...

Cousin Jack - 18 tough miles - March 4th 2023
Cousin Jack - the last event organised by Bys Vyken Events. After 7 years David and Sally are moving onto new ventures so a fitting end to their tenure with this most brutal yet spectacular of runs which takes in 18 miles from St Just to St Ives.It is a breathtaking route weaving its way through lots of old tin mining setups but it is tough particularly the section from Zennor to just before St Ives.I started recording just before we left the Miners Chapel in St Just which was race HQ and whilst the...

This is the third of my trilogy of podcasts about the 2023 Arc of Attrition. On this episode Vassos Alexander shares his experience of this increasingly iconic event.Vassos compares the brutality of the course with the overwhelming friendliness of those who organise it and support it. A big shout out to Jane and Ferg of MudcrewWe met when Vassos came into the Penzance aid station at 39 miles and knowing he was in the race I took along a copy of his Running up that Hill book and asked him to sign it which he...

Dunes in the Dark
One of the UK's most prominent ultra running events, the Arc of Attrition, is happening in Cornwall on January 27-28th. There are two versions the 100 mile which starts in Coverack and then shares the same last 50 miles with 50 mile version which starts at the Minack Theatre. The sand dunes at Hayle come into play with around 14 miles to go in both events and at the end of the dunes in the final checkpoint at Godrevy. My plan is to run the Arc 50 in 2024 so now is a good time of year to practice running the dunes...

I first met Carrie at the Cornwall Running show in April 2022. Carrie was persuaded to do a short podcast recording during which she explained that she had returned to running in 2021 after several years absence and had decided in 2022 to take on four challenges. And not just any old challenges but four far from easy ones. The Bodmin Beast marathon – a new event that would combine road and trail and in itself be a significant challengeThe South-West Traverse – 45 miles on the south-west coastal path following the same route as the Classic Quarter – and this year r...

Loch Ness Marathon 2022
This episode, which is episode number 100 of the Running 44@60 Podcast, was largely recorded on the run at the Loch Ness Marathon 2022.After some very severe editing I hope the recording chronicles my run and indeed how difficult I found it in the last 8 miles or so, not because of the terrain or undulations but for reasons I have yet to properly identify I did find myself walking a bit and then predominantly shuffling those last few miles which seemed to take forever.Maybe I simply hadn't trained enough, maybe I was eating and drinking the...

I was lucky enough to take part in the South West Coast Path Relay over the Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday. 4 Challenges in 1 Year with 1 Kidney with Carrie Glenister
A few years ago Carrie Glenister donated one of her kidneys. Then in March 2021 Carrie started Couch to 5k but got fed up with the pace of the programme. So instead she went from Couch to Ultra Marathon in six months. The Ultra was the Saints Way a 28 mile self navigated challenge from Padstow on the north coast of Cornwall to Fowey on the south coast. But that wasn't enough. So Carrie set herself a new challenge for 2022 - to run 4 major events - 2 marathons and 2 ultras and raise at least £2500 for the Roya...
