Looking to a Future Without Alzheimer's
Alzheimer’s disease is a major health crisis that is projected to become an even larger threat in the coming decades. According to the National Institute on Aging, the number of Americans 65 and older with Alzheimer’s could rise from 5.8 million in 2020 to 13.8 million by 2050. Given the severity of this health crisis and the toll it takes on patients, their families and society, we must be prepared today to address the needs of tomorrow. Dean Frank LaFerla of UC Irvine's School of Biological Sciences presents an overview of the state of Alzheimer’s disease research. Following his presentation, the panel discus...

Navigating the Design Space of Trajectories Toward Low/Zero-Carbon Energy Systems in California
Transforming our energy infrastructure to support greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goals will require the deployment of technologies such as electric vehicles and energy storage. Improper integration of these technologies into the electric grid and a lack of careful planning of their scale, however, can significantly reduce their real-world effectiveness in supporting GHG emissions reduction goals. Research by Brian Tarroja and his colleagues at UC Irvine presented here focus on identifying grid integration needs and life cycle planning considerations for electric vehicles and energy storage deployment to better ensure that their potential GHG benefits are fully realized in future electricity...

Free Speech on Campus: The 2018 Wade Clark Roof Human Rights Lecture with UC Irvine Chancellor Howard Gillman
Hardly a week goes by without another controversy over free speech on college campuses. On one side, there are increased demands to censor hateful, disrespectful, and bullying expression and to ensure an inclusive and nondiscriminatory learning environment. On the other side are traditional free speech advocates who charge that recent demands for censorship coddle students and threaten free inquiry. UC Irvine Chancellor Howard Gillman is an expert in the American Constitution and the Supreme Court. Here he discusses why campuses must provide supportive learning environments for an increasingly diverse student body but can never restrict the expression of ideas. Series: "...

Burke Lecture: Francisco J. Ayala: Darwin’s Gift to Science and Religion
Darwin is deservedly given credit for the theory of biological evolution. Most important, however, is that he discovered natural selection, the process that accounts for the adaptive organization of organisms and their features; that is, their "design.” UC Irvine professor Francisco J. Ayala, explains that the design of organisms is not intelligent, as would be expected from an engineer, but imperfect and worse. Natural selection is Darwin's gift to religion, because the dysfunctions and waste of the living world need not be attributed to the Creator, but explained as an outcome of a natural process.
