L.I.S.A. WISSENSCHAFTSPORTAL GERDA HENKEL STIFTUNG
After Circulation.

Feathers in European History
Cambridge 16 (General Training) | Test 3 | Section 3Feathers as Decoration in European History Today, we do not generally associate feathers with the militaryin Europe, yet history shows that in fact feathers have played an intriguing role in European military clothing. The Royalists in the English Civil War adorned their headgear with ostrich feathers. “His...

Literatur: Ulin...

The Astronomer and the Witch: Kepler's Mother
In 1615 Katharina Kepler, illiterate mother of the astronomer Johannes Kepler, was accused of being a witch. At that time in Germany, there was a witch ‘craze’. Over half of the c.50,000 executions in Europe for witchcraft between 1500 and 1700 took place in Germany. During the next 6 years Katharina fought her accusation. The astronomer took over her legal defence in 1620. This lecture explores this astonishing story, and asks how the witch craze affected people’s lives. A lecture by Ulinka Rublack FBA The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectur...

Famous hats in history
There have been so many, probably hundreds, different styles and types of hat in history that a question inevitably arises: why? Why did something that began as a simple protection against inclement weather take on such varied forms and social meanings? Bridget Kendall and guests explore not just how hats were made, and by whom, but also how their function has evolved over centuries and across cultures. By focusing on just five distinct hat types, they sketch out a brief social history of headwear. Bridget is joined by Dr. Drake Stutesman, an adjunct professor at New York...
