Murrow awards 2022 - overall excellence - WLRN News
WLRN News’ reporting last year changed policy, resulted in unjust charges being dropped and revealed little-known histories. We covered censorship in Florida public schools, a new surge of Haitian and Cuban migrants arriving by boat and the worst housing affordability crisis in the country. And, of course, we covered the big national and international news — elections, hurricanes, the rollback of abortion rights, the World Cup — but with the sense of place WLRN News is known for.

Murrow Awards 2022 - continuing coverage - WLRN News
Throughout the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, South Florida has emerged as ground zero of a problem that has gripped the entire nation: The rise of housing costs. WLRN's Daniel Rivero produced a body of reporting that draws from deep personal stories, holds government officials accountable and highlights solutions. Rivero's reporting also explores how the 2021 condo tower collapse in Surfside, which left 98 dead, has complicated the issue locally. This is a compilation of Rivero's work, prepared for a Murrow Awards entry.

Murrow Awards 2022 - hard news - WLRN News
When Caleb Freestone signed up to speak in favor of sex education at a Miami-Dade County School Board meeting last July, he didn’t expect to spend the night in jail. During that meeting, conservative activists accused Freestone of being “antifa” — and also pressured the board to toss out its sex ed curriculum. WLRN’s Kate Payne examines the arrest: Were Freestone’s rights violated? What about potential chilling effects on free speech? Later, the charges against him were dropped. This is a compilation of Payne's reporting, prepared for an entry in the Murrow Awards.
