In 2002 he made the move up the highway to Melbourne where his game went to a new level as a defender, adding a further 88 games over another six years. Clint retired from football at the end of 2007 with a total of 163 AFL games, booting 79 goals along the way. Starting out as a rugged half back flanker, Toohey proved he could occasionally pinch hit in attack as he demonstrated with a seven goal haul (including 5 in the last quarter) also against the Tigers in 1982.
His stand-out season with the Cats was in 1985 as he cemented his reputation as one of the best dashing defenders in the league and earning the first of many State guernseys.

Following some excellent form in the Reserves, Ron made his senior debut in Round 11 against Richmond at the MCG and backed it up the following week against Footscray at the Western Oval.
