Maharshi helped them by arranging their stay in the house of a Brahmin family. Paandavs took to begging as a means of livelihood. One day, Bheem had not gone for begging. Kuntee and Bheem heard their host Brahmin family crying loudly. Brahmin, his wife and his daughter – each of them wanted to sacrifice his / her life, but could not decide who should go. Kuntee asked them the reason for the crisis in their lives. Brahmin explained that there was a cannibal raakshas named Bak. Every day one family of the city (by turns) was required to send huge quantity of cooked rice, two buffaloes and a human being for the cannibal raakshas. Next day was their turn and it was devastating for their family. Kuntee said that they need not worry. Her son, Bheem, will go instead of any of them and will face the raakshas. Initially, the Brahmin was hesitant but later agreed to the proposal. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Hidimbvadh Parv & Bakvadh Parv/Chapters 155, 156, 157, 158, 159 and 160).
