S2E4 Capital and Labor Part 2 - Populism and the People's Party
Episode 4: Capital and Labor Part 2 - Populism and the People's PartyThe episode delves into the intricate tapestry of the People's Party and the burgeoning populism that emerged during the Gilded Age, a period marked by stark economic disparity and social upheaval. We explore the profound grievances of American farmers, who felt increasingly beleaguered by monopolistic practices and a deflationary currency tethered to the gold standard, thus igniting a grassroots movement aimed at restoring their economic autonomy. Central to our discussion is the formidable William Jennings Bryan, whose impassioned oratory, particularly his iconic "Cross of Gold" speech...

100 Years Later: The REAL STORY Behind the ‘Monkey Trial’ w/ Dr. Rick Townsend | Ep 85
Was the Scopes “Monkey Trial” ever really about science—or was it a staged showdown with a hidden agenda? In this episode of All Rise, we talk to Dr. Rick Townsend, a historian of ideas whose groundbreaking dissertation uncovers the real story behind one of the most famous courtroom dramas in American history: the 1925 Scopes Trial. For a century, we’ve been told it was the moment science defeated religion. But what if the real battle wasn’t evolution vs. creation—but parental rights vs. elite control? Dr. Townsend walks us through how the trial was orchestrated...

Scopes Monkey Trial - 100 Year Anniversay
Give to help Chris continue making Truce I made these episodes a few years ago, but since it is the 100th anniversary of the Scopes "Monkey" trial, I thought we should revisit them! Tennessee was the first state in the United States to crack down hard on the teaching of evolution in public schools. Others had dabbled, but Tennessee went all the way. The ACLU wanted to challenge the validity of the case in the courts. In order to do that they needed an educator to teach it, get busted, and be brought to trial.

Evolution vs. Creation: The Battle for America's Classrooms
On July 10th, 1925, the Scopes Trial, also known as the "Monkey Trial," began in Dayton, Tennessee. This landmark legal case was a defining moment in the ongoing debate between the teaching of evolution and creationism in American public schools. The trial centered around John Scopes, a high school biology teacher who was accused of violating the state's Butler Act, which prohibited the teaching of human evolution in public schools. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) had offered to defend anyone who challenged the law, and Scopes volunteered to be the defendant. The trial quickly gained national...

The Real Monkey Business: What the 1925 Scopes Trial was actually all about
Next month, America will celebrate the centenary of the Scopes Trial, the so-called 1925 “Monkey Trial” on evolution that riveted a nation. Although perhaps celebrate is the wrong word to describe the Tennessee trial that not only riveted America but also divided it. According to the historian Brenda Wineapple, author of Keeping The Faith: God, Democracy, and the Trial that Riveted a Nation, the Scopes trial is as relevant to America in 2025 as it was in 1925. According to Wineapple, the trial wasn't really about science versus religion at all. Neither side truly understood Darwin's theory of evolution, which had...

Eugenics. It's one of those words that gets thrown around these days, often by people accusing "the other side" of wrongdoing. But what is eugenics?I invited law professor Paul Lombardo, author of "Three Generations, No Imbeciles", to join me to try to answer that very question. It turns out that that question is harder to answer than you'd think. In the early 1900s, the word "eugenic" was often used to mean "pure" or to imply that a product was healthy for babies. But that word also extended into segregating certain populations from society and forced sterilizations.

He founded the Northwestern schools to spread his vision of Christianity and picked debates with modernists at the University of Chicago. He formed the World's Christian Fundamentals Association...

25 William McKinley
William McKinley was a middle-class Ohio boy who received an education-by-fire in the Civil War, where his commanding officer and mentor was future President Rutherford B. Hayes. After the war, he followed in Hayes's footsteps as a lawyer and politician, overcoming family tragedy while working his way up into the Republican congressional leadership and becoming Ohio's governor. In 1896, he had no serious rival for his party's presidential nomination, and defeated populist Democrat William Jennings Bryan in a hard-fought general election that pitted silver versus gold. As president, his masterful grasp of economic policy boosted the nation's expanding industrial prowess—but...

The Treaties of William Jennings Bryan
William Jennings Bryan. If we know him at all it is from the Scopes Monkey Trial at the end of his life. Or maybe we know of his 3 failed campaigns for President of the United States on the Democratic ticket. But many of us are unaware of his efforts to establish world peace. William Jennings Bryan hated war. He wasn't a pacifist - he enlisted for the Spanish-American War after all. But he saw the meaningless carnage of war and vowed to do his best to reduce the amount of bloodshed. So "The Commoner" used...

Social Darwinism and the Spanish-American War | Christian Fundamentalism Series
The 1800s were an era of big questions, many of which we answered in cruel and selfish ways. Is one race better than another? Is one religion? If so, which one? In what ways? Is one economic system better than another? Is one system of governance like a democratic republic like the US, or socialist, or monarchy, theocracy, communism, best? Some people answered these questions with a resounding "yes". But if we think our people and ways are better than anyone else's, what responsibility do we have to spread those things? Men like Henry...

History professor and author Michael Kazin says that populism is an important tool when it comes to regulating power. In the late 1800s, railroads and banks were out of control. Industrialists like John D. Rockefeller had uninhibited control of their markets. Rockefeller believed in social Darwinism and didn't mind using dirty tactics to undermine his competition. The Populist Party sprouted out...

The Scopes Monkey Trial
Imagine sitting in a 97-degree court room in the middle of July while you’re being prosecuted for a crime you’re not even sure you committed. This is exactly the situation twenty-four-year-old John T. Scopes found himself in during the summer of 1925. Almost overnight this trial became a national sensation and put the small town of Dayton, Tennessee on the map. It would involve two of the most famous attorneys of the day going head-to-head over a newly passed Tennessee State law called the Butler Act. What was the crime? What if William Jennings Bryan won the Presidency?
Born in Illinois, William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) became a Nebraska congressman in 1890. He starred at the 1896 Democratic convention with his Cross of Gold speech that favored free silver, but was defeated in his bid to become U.S. president by William McKinley. Bryan lost his subsequent bids for the presidency in 1900 and 1908, using the years between to run a newspaper and tour as a public speaker. After helping Woodrow Wilson secure the Democratic presidential nomination for 1912, he served as Wilson’s secretary of state until 1914. In his later years, Bryan campaigned for peace, prohibition and suffrage, and increasingly criticized th...

Cooler Heads Prevail
By 1914 the world’s European colonial powers were so entangled in complicated treaty alliances that if triggered by a single political incident, they might invariably ignite a powder keg leading to a multinational war. On the stage of international affairs, saber-rattling had become the diplomatic norm, and with the expansion of colonial powers around the globe, these tensions created a very unstable world. Such instability and fear-fueled an arms race with technological innovations to develop the first weapons of mass destruction in history. Was a Great War -- a world war -- to be inevitable? There was certainly a cle...

If Donald Trump believed in anything aside from his own instant gratification -- he does not... But if he did, it would be Herbert Spencer's idea of Social Darwinism. In nature, the strongest and fittest survive, and in human nature, only the strongest and fittest deserve to rule over the weak and survive in luxury at the top. The weak are here to feed the strong.
