被誉为讲道王子的司布真仅仅16岁时，就开始人生第一次布道， 19岁的时候他开始在新公园街聚会所布道，之后的38年里，一直到他去世之前，司布真都在这家教会布道。他60岁不到就被接回天家，但是即便如此，在这38年的布道生涯里，他的产出是令人震撼的。
他每周布道10多次，要读六本书来准备布道，还要回复五百多封信，他每次布道结束后，文字稿就会印刷出来，每周售出大概25,000份，被翻译成20种文字。后人将他所有的布道集结成册，这些布道集结起来一共有63卷，大概25,000,000字，这与大不列颠百科全书的字数相等。除此之外，他还创建了一家牧师学院，一家孤儿院，训练了九百多名门徒，还主办了一份杂志，写了140十多本书。
这样一位杰出的传道人，拥有这么多高质量的产出，在我们的想象中，他一定是一个精力充沛，干劲十足，不知疲倦的人。可是事实并非如此。司布真饱受各种病痛的折磨，特别是他常年受到抑郁症的影响，许多年来，他有三分之一的时间都无法正常工作。
1856年10月19号是周日，年仅22岁的司布真来到皇家花园的音乐厅布道，这是一个临时的场所，因为他的教会正在扩建，以满足越来越多的会众的需要。这时，音乐厅的会堂里已经聚集了7000多人，突然有人恶作剧的大叫“着火了“，会堂里聚集的人争先恐后地离开，发生了踩踏事件。很不幸，这次事故导致七人死亡，28人严重受伤。所有伦敦的报纸都无情地指责司布真，这场悲剧也彻底地改变了司布真。
