S30E19: Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald
Today, Alicia has the sad tale of the King and Queen of the Jazz Age, writer F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald. Though they never divorced, the story is a great illustration of the reality that some marriages don’t work, and a lot of people would be better off ending a marriage rather than staying in it. That's what Alicia wishes that Zelda had decided, dancing away from their doomed marriage a century ago instead of disappearing into it. Love & Misery
F. Scott Fitzgerald & Zelda Sayre
To mention these two is to invoke the 1920s, the Jazz Age, romance, and their outrageous early success, with all its attendant pitfalls. Their names can summon images of taxis at dusk, they conjure images of gleaming hotel lobbies and smoky speakeasies, flappers, yellow phaetons, white suits, large tips, expatriates, and nostalgia for the Lost Generation. They also remind us of what the effect of alcoholism and mental health can have on a marriage. These two were reckless and abandoned. So, if you heard our last podcast, then you know we are talking about F. Scott Fitzgerald & Zelda Sayre.

The Crack-Up : F. Scott Fitzgerald's "Maladjustment to Life"
Was F. Scott Fitzgerald’s brilliance inseparable from his self-destruction? In this episode of The Mad Genius Thesis, we explore Some Sort of Epic Grandeur by Matthew J. Bruccoli, examining the link between Fitzgerald’s creativity and his struggles with alcoholism, financial instability, and personal turmoil. From his early literary ambitions to his turbulent marriage with Zelda Sayre—whose own mental health battles shaped their lives—Fitzgerald’s genius was shadowed by excess and despair. Did his struggles fuel The Great Gatsby and his other works, or was his artistry a fragile thing crushed by addiction and lost dream...

Secret Life of Books
The Great Gatsby: is this THE great American novel?
Few novels capture a moment and place in time as The Great Gatsby. F Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 masterpiece captures a generation determined to live and party hard in the aftermath of the First World War. There are love affairs, exotic cocktails (a ‘gin rickey’ anyone?), no less than three car crashes and, of course, the famous party scenes. It has been adapted at least eight times for film and television, yet the road from publication to becoming considered one of Great American Novels was a slow burn. Fitzgerald died believing his life a failure. The Great Gatsby has som...

Di qua dal paradiso di F.S. Fitzgerald - #MATTONIAMERICANI

Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald
Zelda Sayre was born and raised in Montgomery, the daughter of a lawyer and politician. She was a socialite and caught the interest of young men from as far away as Atlanta. No one swept her off her feet until she met a young soldier stationed in Montgomery named F. Scott Fitzgerald. Their marriage and volatile relationship became the story ideas for books such as “The Great Gatsby” and made them the poster children of the Jazz Age.
