THE ZION OF ENOCH TAKEN TO THE BOSOM OF THE LORD: Orson Pratt, July 19, 1874, SLC Tabernacle
Orson Pratt gave a sermon on Salt Lake City, Utah in July of 1874 at the Old Tabernacle. Among other doctrines discussed, was the topic of Enoch. In this sermon he taught about many aspects of Zion, including Enoch and his people, along with their characters and attributes. It has been over 150 years since this talk was given, but the principles and doctrines that Orson Pratt taught, specifically about those of translation, are even more relevant than they ever have been. We are fast approaching that day when translation will be restored that the work of the Savior will move...

From stay-at-home-mom to breadwinner — help for LDS women if the marriage ends | Episode 390
In 1981, then-apostle Ezra Taft Benson rose to the pulpit during a General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and told women: “You were elected by God to be wives and mothers in Zion. Exaltation in the Celestial Kingdom is predicated on faithfulness to that calling. Since the beginning, a woman’s first and most important role has been ushering into mortality spirit sons and daughters of our Father in Heaven.” Even when another eventual church president, apostle Gordon B. Hinckley, encouraged women in 1989 to “get all the education you can,” he paired it with a wish...

In Psalm 87, we see Zion celebrated as the city of God, a symbol of His presence, promises, and eternal purpose. The psalm points to the joy and life found in God alone and reveals His heart for all nations to be counted as His own. Let's explore how this psalm calls us to fix our eyes on eternity, share the hope of the Gospel, and draw deeply from the living water only He can provide.

What is happening at BYU and why it matters | Episode 373
Brigham Young University has a “unique and compelling faith-based mission to develop disciples of Jesus Christ,” says school spokesperson Carri Jenkins. To that end, the school has long required students and faculty to hold a “temple recommend,” which attests to belief and behavior standards set out by BYU’s owner, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Under the leadership of the church’s commissioner of education, Clark Gilbert, the school has added extra layers of rules, meant to ensure devotion to beliefs beyond what the church expects of its members — namely a firm “testimony” of th...

At the recently completed General Conference, the 100-year-old religious leader explained the reason for the building blitz rather succinctly: God commanded it, he declared, because “the Savior is coming again.” Historian Benjamin Park sees other forces at play as well. But mounting persecutions and prosecutions left leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints feeling so abandoned by the country that gave the faith birth that they abandoned the country itself. Zion National Park’s overcrowding remains a problem in 2023
Whether the news coming out of Zion National Park over the weekend is good or bad largely depends on a person’s perspective — and whether they have designs on visiting the Southern Utah jewel in the near future. The optimistic takeaway is that the park was less crowded in 2022, when its visitation dropped from a record 5 million visitors the year prior, according to a news release issued by the National Park Service on Friday. More pessimistically, last year still ranked as the second-busiest in Zion’s history with 4.5 million visitors. Among the 63 official national parks, it saw the third-most visits. Read m...

The 1909 City Government Election of Zion, Illinois (Episode 34)
Grab a handful of Brazil nuts and a glass of buttermilk, and join us for the tale of a knock-down, drag-out election between the dictator of a small town and the citizens who want him and his cronies out of office. The 1909 election in Zion, Illinois should have been a straightforward democratic vote, but it turned into something much, much more. On this episode, we've got it all: voter suppression and oppression, a collection of con artists and their grifts, millions of dollars in stolen and misappropriated funding, Flat Earthers run amok, and how the town of Zion came...

Both roads lead to eternity, one to life everlasting in heaven with the Savior and the other leads to the lake of fire. Having created historical context for the pipeline in two previous podcasts, In Site now explores the pipeline itself. Jane Whalen, board member of Conserve Southwest Utah and Coordinator of the Lake Powell Pipeline Coalition, was the primary architect of their collective, incredibly thorough and detailed one hundred and eighty-six page objection to the pipeline (see link below). Quite simply, nobody involved with the pipeline understands it better than Jane. We focused on the pipeline because the Zion Canyon Mesa intends to actively participate in critical issues directly facing our home here in Washington County. In these strange, unmo...

DawgmanRadio: Lake talks Utah win, upcoming Stanford fist-fight
You could still see the smile on Jimmy Lake's face on Monday as he was asked quite a few questions about his team's thrilling come-from-behind win over Utah and the resiliency his team showed in shutting out the Utes while scoring 24 points in the second half against a very good defense. But like all great coaches, Lake isn't going to bask in the glory of a win when he has just five days to get ready for another talented and physical opponent like Stanford.Lake said that redshirt freshman quarterback Dylan Morris showed on Saturday night why he...

Jimmy Lake spent his Monday press conference praising his team's efforts and their ability to handle adversity in their win over Oregon State on Saturday night. He was especially effusive in his praise of offensive coordinator John Donovan and redshirt freshman quarterback Dylan Morris, the latter of which he felt played as well as he could have considering the conditions.A big reason Lake was so encouraged by what Morris was able to do was the fact that even in rainy and windy conditions, the South Sound native was able handle the ball well in the running game...

Is The Water Wet? - Lake Powell Pipeline Part 2 with Eric Kuhn
Eric digs into how politicians ignored drought data to create the 1922 Colorado River Compact, and how that intentional myopia continued for almost a century. Today, the entire basin must finally reckon with what has been true all along; that the allocated water just is not there. He busts two foundational myths along the way, one about the science and data, and the other about water use. He then situates the Lake Powell Pipeline (LPP) into the present moment of truth, setting the stage for our next, perhaps final podcast about the LPP itself. We say “perhaps,” because if this...

How to Grieve Captivity as People of God
Continuing our study on “Captive”, we look at the aftermath of tragedy. The book of Lamentations is a natural followup to Jeremiah where God’s chosen people had their holy land destroyed because they wouldn’t change. Lamentations is about the raw emotion of grief following disaster. Many times in the Bible, God is portrayed as a loving husband who experiences infidelity, not faithfulness. Indeed, Lamentations 1:1-2 reads as if Jerusalem is a widow suffering the loneliness of loss, “...How deserted lies the city once so full of people… Bitterly she weeps at night… there is no one to comfort her.” That fir...

Latter-day Faith host Dan Wotherspoon gets into sharing mode about it, as well. Kim’s recent reflections on Zion were prompted by his being asked this past year to give a sacrament meeting talk on the Second Coming, a topic Kim wasn’t at all enthusiastic to speak on. (Neither would many of us, we suspect!) But then, as he further queried his heart and mind, he found a way...
