The Daily Aftershock (Writing Prompt)
The Immovable Stance by Helen Ivory
Buy the book here: https://www.aftershockreview.com/product-page/issue-1-the-aftershock-reviewListen to our Daily Aftershock Podcast here: https://aftershockpoetry.substack.com/s/the-daily-aftershock-writing-promptA Note from the Editor:Here, we see how memory lands like a backfist. The Immovable Stance offers no neat redemption arc, only the weight of a father's words and the off-kilter balance of inherited harm. Shotokan Karate’s fudo-dachi becomes more than a posture here: it’s the grim theatre of masculinity, of who gets to stay rooted and who is scattered. But it’s also about patriarchal unrave...

The Snow Globe by Helen Ivory
The Aftershock Review is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support the magazine, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.A Note from the Editor:Helen Ivory’s third poem in our inaugural issue Snow Globe holds a different kind of cold. Not the sharpness of winter, but the slow, creeping frost of neglect—the way intimacy can harden over time into something you don’t recognise. You think you’re surviving it, lighting fairy lights inside a dead hearth, sipping Cristal out of tulip glasses, waiting for warmth to retur...

That Friday Afternoon by Helen Ivory
The Aftershock Review is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.A Note from the Editor, exclusive to Substack:Helen Ivory’s second poem in Issue One of The Aftershock Review (£12.99) made me somersault at my desk. That Friday Afternoon accomplishes something extraordinary. It lingers in the way trauma does — how certain memories don’t survive as stories, but as textures worn into the walls and floors of a life lived in extremis. This poem refuses to shout. It lets...

The Daily Aftershock (Writing Prompt)
Why I Called Him Bluebeard by Helen Ivory
A note from the Editor:When I first read this poem, I sat very still. I thought of all the times we’ve needed myth to say what felt unsayable. How story can be a mask, but also a mirror. Helen Ivory’s Why I Called Him Bluebeard doesn’t flinch. It moves through fear, memory, and language with astonishing clarity. It just had to open our inaugural issue. Here, poetry becomes a spell, an unmaking, and a reckoning. — Max WallisWhy I Called Him Bluebeardby Helen Ivory | poet | artist Bec...

The Daily Aftershock (Writing Prompt)
Section I - Opening Tremors / Naming the Damage - (Meet the contributors!)
Opening Tremors / Naming the DamageWe begin where it begins: with rupture. The poems in this first section speak from the brink, in the language of impact, aftermath, and the moment something breaks. This is where the damage is named. Not to retraumatise, but to mark its outline, to say this happened. These poems are raw-boned, necessary, unflinching. They give shape to the unspeakable, refusing the silence that so often follows trauma. This is the first tremor, the shock before the aftershock. The moment the world tilts, and you know nothing will ever be the same again.

The Allusionist
203. Flyting
In 15th and 16th century Scotland, in the highest courts of the land, you'd find esteemed poets hurling insults at each other. This was flyting, a sort of medieval equivalent of battle rap, and it was so popular at the time that the King himself wrote instructions for how to do it well. Writer and Scots language campaigner Ishbel McFarlane and historical linguist Joanna Kopaczyk explain the art of flyting, where an insult becomes slander, what's going on within the speech act of performative diss-trading, and what the legal consequences could be of being accused of witchcraft. ...

There's so much more to say about Singlish after last episode that we're saying some more of it this episode. Poet and academic Gwee Li Sui, author of Spiaking Singlish: A Companion to how Singaporeans Communicate, describes the resistance he received in Singapore when he published Singlish translations of literary works - and why they are important and celebratory for Singlish. And Stacey Mei Yan Fong, baker and author of 50 Pies, 50 States, explains how the language that used to be embarrassing for her is now a huge comfort. Find out more about the episode and read the...

201. Singlish
"If you grow up being told that one of your first languages, Singlish, is actually a bad version of an already existing language, you kind of get this sense that “I'm just bad at language,” says Bibek Gurung, a former linguist who grew up in Singapore speaking Singlish with his family and friends, while schools and the government tried to quash it. "Language is a fundamental human skill. And to just have this sense that you're bad at this very fundamental skill really does a number to your self esteem and your abilities to communicate in general." Find...

She Goes By Jane
Sneha Philip with guest reader Sakina Jaffrey Part 2
Though Dr. Sneha Philip, who lived just blocks from the World Trade Center, is last seen on September 10th, she is added to the list of 9/11 victims. That is until the NYPD starts investigating her personal history and this investigation leads to her removal. Over the years her family fights for her to be recognized as one of the victims and, in 2008, she finally is. Despite this, what one judge calls rank speculation about her, and her disappearance, continues. This week our guest reader is Sakina Jaffrey. Sakina can currently be seen on the...

She Goes By Jane
Sneha Philip with guest reader Sakina Jaffrey
New York City, September 10th, 2001. The day before the attacks on the World Trade Center is a day when most New York City residents are going about their regular business. The same was true for Dr. Sneha Philip who left her Battery Park apartment that evening to run some errands. It wasn’t unusual for her to spend the night out in the city, but when she doesn’t return home by the next day, her family knows something is wrong. The problem? With all eyes on the terrorist attacks, can they get anyone to listen?

Backpedaling About Gender in Britain
A recent article in The Atlantic by Helen Lewis made the bold claim that “The Gender War Is Over in Britain.” An overstatement, to be sure, but not entirely unwarranted. Keir Starmer, head of the Labour Party, recently led his party away from full support of radical gender ideology. This was a notable shift for the United Kingdom’s largest left-wing party, which had previously encouraged radical elements of trans activism and stood aside as feminists were canceled for resisting the new orthodoxy. The shift, which was quietly announced to the public, made “three big declarations.” One was that “se...

There used to be ivory towers of academic learning, elitist, only a few could enter. Universities around the country are facing the reality of having to lay off staff and cut classes. Richard Diamond, Private Detective is an American detective drama, created by Blake Edwards, which aired on radio from 1949 to 1953. Richard Diamond, Private Detective was a happy-go-lucky detective who answered his telephone with atrocious commercial jingles and was a master of the verbal putdown (especially with the police). Episodes typically open with a client visiting or calling cash-strapped Diamond's office and agreeing to his fee of $100 a day plus expenses, or Diamond taking on a case at the behest of his friend and former partner, Lt. Walter Levinson. Diamond often suffers a blow to the head in his sleuthing pursuits. Most...

In this episode of the Solutions With David Ansara podcast, I speak with British writer Helen Pluckrose about the pernicious influence of Critical Theory, and how to push back against these dangerous ideas. Helen and I discuss the postmodern origins of Critical Theory, and how it escaped the ivory tower of academia to become mainstream. This has dramatically altered the way we talk about race, gender and sexuality, she says. Helen argues that what passes for 'Social Justice' is in fact a fundamentally illiberal and intolerant ideology. Its adherents suppress free speech, foster a culture of...
