The Modern CopThe Modern CopCole AKA @thesalted_rim - Cultivating Success in the New BloodIn today's episode, I sit down via phone with Cole (AKA Thesalted_rim on IG). Cole has been in law enforcement for around ten years and has served as a patrol officer and SWAT operator. Cole's page on Instagram caught my eye because right in the bio section of his page he mentions mentoring future police officers. We all have mentors, but we can also all think of a person (or team of people) who are the saltiest group in the department. While he may like salted rims (I'll leave that one alone), Cole does not want to show...2023-10-251h 44The Modern CopThe Modern CopWake up, survive, go to bed -Jason Mow, retired police officer and defense contractorJason Mow began serving his community in the late 90s with a local police department before making the hard decision to leave policing. He found his way to the State Department as a defense contractor and spent thirteen months in Afghanistan teaching police tactics to the local police force. At the conclusion of his service in Afghanistan, Jason returned to Arizona and went to work for Phoenix Police Department where he went back to his roots as a patrol officer. One night as Jason was about to end his shift, he heard of another officer needing assistance. As Jason...2023-09-131h 40The Modern CopThe Modern CopRecruiting and Retention - Matt Thomas, DeputyDangerous, Andrew from the Green Line, Mikey the Canadian Copper, and Clint from Loving County, TexasRecruiting and Retention. It's the elephant in the room. In today's episode, I'm joined by officers from around the country and even from Canada as we discuss the ins and outs of getting people through the door and keeping those solid candidates through their careers. 2023-08-151h 57The Modern CopThe Modern CopGenerational Differences In PolicingSolo episode today about generational differences in policing. Now, I'm just one millennial cop, but I've wanted to respond to a few things I've heard about how we're lazy or won't come in on our off time to fill a beat. This is not a confrontational episode shaming the older generations - this is an attempt to point out what our (millennial) thought process is.   Stay safe, and I'll see you on the road.  2023-08-0842 minThe Modern CopThe Modern CopBack in the Saddle Again - State of the Channel and Thin Blue Line UK flag ban responseI've been gone long enough! I was sick, I've been busy with life, but I am back with another episode, and have plenty more to come! I woke up at 0300 today unable to fall back asleep, so I got up, poured a cup of coffee and decided to use my time to record an episode. As I ate breakfast and rubbed the sleep from my eyes, I came across a story on several UK officer's social media pages regarding the London Met banning the thin blue line flag. Officers in the UK have it tough, and so...2023-07-0634 minThe Modern CopThe Modern CopGlenn Topping - policing from the Cold War to post - 9/11On today's episode, I spoke with Glenn Topping. Glenn retired from a south Florida sheriff's in 2009 after serving for 25 years on patrol as a deputy and sergeant. In that time, he also worked as a crisis negotiator, narcotics interdiction detective, and he also started one of the first active killer response training programs in the US in the late 80s. Glenn shared stories about baring witness to a drive-by shooting at a nightclub and about using a tow truck for something other than its intended purpose! Prior to his time as a deputy in Florida, Glenn served int he...2023-01-241h 16The Modern CopThe Modern CopHelicopter Trunk Monkeys with Mike - AZDPS Air Rescue ParamedicWelcome back to The Modern Cop Podcast! After much needed time away with family and a pretty hectic work schedule, I'm kicking off 2023 by sitting down with Mike AKA @helicopter_trunk_monkeys to discuss his very niche role in policing as an air rescue medic for the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Mike discusses his decision to leave his position as a fire captain with Gila River FD and transition over to AZDPS as a new guy to fulfill his goal of becoming an air rescue medic. I took to IG live and opened the floor for anyone to speak. We had a good conversation about changing the ego-driven aspects of police culture. In today's day and age, there's a time to kick ass and a time to build each other up. This needs to occur at all levels. This week, I'd like to shout out the Dallas Crimes Against Children Conference. I'm excited to attend and to learn from some top notch instructors. Thank you all for listening to the show! 2022-08-091h 03The Modern CopThe Modern CopCultivating Confidence with Josh of Force FrontierOn today's episode, I sat down with Josh, founder of Force Frontier. Force Frontier is a training organization which draws upon Josh and his team's years of service in policing to "make good people dangerous." Josh has spent the last several years as a patrol officer, DT instructor, and SWAT team member in the State of Ohio. Force Frontier currently conducts training in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. I do accidentally refer to Josh's company as "Force Options" several times, and I apologize for that! I look forward to seeing Force Frontier grow into the organization...2022-07-201h 00The Modern CopThe Modern CopQ&A Session - July 2022On today's episode, I answered questions sent in from Instagram about the job. I enjoy being able to give my two cents to some of these, and there are some themes that will be revisited with guests in the future. I'll work these into the rotation every few months so long as you don't mind my phone sex voice.   Maybe I need a co-host for these...   Also, the #goodcopsgiveaway will be back for a second year! After reporting her abuser at the age of 14, Kayleigh thought that horrific chapter of her life was over and done with until, ten years later, she was notified that her abuser was trying to get his lifetime probation rescinded. After being forced to face the man who had abused her as a child in court, a fire was ignited within her, and she began the process of writing "Kayleigh's Law" into the statutes. Kayleigh's Law protects victims by ensuring they never have...2022-04-111h 37The Modern CopThe Modern CopPhD from the Streets - Knowledge Bombs with BC SandersOn today's episode, I sat down for a great discussion with BC Sanders. Actually, with BC's twenty-year career combatting gang-related issues in the South, I felt more like a student in a very interesting college class. B.C.'s outside-the-box efforts to curb the gang problem in America are enlightening, as is his approach to interacting with the different types of gang members. I'm excited to see what the future brings for B.C. and I encourage you all to keep an eye on what he's got coming down the pipe. Find B.C. on Instagram @b.c.sanders2022-04-072h 02The Modern CopThe Modern CopNick Tuttle and The MicLoopOn today's episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Nick Tuttle, inventor of the TheMicLoop. Cody's book paints a vivid portrait of life as a DSS agent. From running ops with local PDs in Houston, Texas, to wining and dining (and karaoke singing) top Vietnamese brass in Ho-Chih-Minh City, and being mortared in Iraq while then-Vice President Biden was on location, Cody's life has been full of adventure...2022-02-232h 01The Modern CopThe Modern CopCross-Pod with Bottom Dwellers Dive Shack and Ambrosia TerrebonneA couple of weeks ago, Armando from Bottom Dwellers Dive Shack podcast hit me up and asked me to join him during an interview with Jack Lewis, perhaps better known by his nomme du guerre "Ambrosia Terrebonne". Jack is a Navy veteran, and earned his dolphins in the Silent Service - America's submarine fleet. After working opposite schedules for more than a year, I was finally able to sit down with Cat AKA @pewpewgoddess to talk about her experiences as a woman in law enforcement, an FTO and how she has come back swinging after multiple injuries. Spoiler alert: we drank it allDetention Officer Ursula came onto the show with my first return guest - Officer Kristen to talk about The Tactical Games where they came in first and third place, respectively, of the women's intermediate class. A score of less than 2% separated them.   Ursula gave both of us an education on what life was like for our DOs and COs, all while we drank an entire bottle of Smoke Wagon barrel proof bourbon. As expected, the night became increasingly entertaining! 2022-02-123h 56The Modern CopThe Modern CopWalking the razor’s edge with Toby HarndenThis interview should have lasted for five hours. Liv schooled me on how our Canadian brothers and sisters work, and talked to me about her comic strip, Thin Blue Scribble. Thin Blue Scribble is one more way that a good cop is trying to give a glimpse behind the badge. Liv's art packs plenty of humour (see that, I used "ou" like they do in Canada) along with more than a few instances of the stark...2021-09-271h 18The Modern CopThe Modern CopLive Life For All It‘s Worth - Officer Kristen, the Unity Tour, Tactical Games, and Spartan RacesEvery so often you meet someone who makes you think "wow...I need to do more with my life." Kristen is no exception. Kristen began her career as a forensics tech, and then became a sworn officer for the same agency. I asked Kristen to educate me on what being a female officer was like, and what challenges she's faced. Kristen then dove into her experiences with the Police Unity Tour - a grueling bike ride of nearly 300 miles. If that isn't enough for her never-say-die attitude, Kristen also repeatedly completes Spartan Race Trifectas (5k, 10k, 21k races) and...2021-09-191h 59The Modern CopThe Modern CopMy first threesome - Derrick and Brandon of the Texas Tactical Police Officers AssociationWithin five minutes of talking with TTPOA reps Derrick and Branden, I knew this was going to be a fun conversation - and we had a name for this episode.  I had the pleasure of sitting down (via Zoom) with Derrick and Branden of the Texas Tactical Police Officers Association. We cracked open a new bottle of Horse Soldiers Bourbon and chased the rabbit as far as we could for three hours. Chris' police career has encompassed patrol, NET, and SWAT. Chris now serves as a training officer for the new recruits coming through the academy. Chris has some awesome ideas on how police departments can hire better candidates and retain officers and we both agree that "the way we've always done it" is the most frustrating phrase i...2021-08-293h 04The Modern CopThe Modern CopHi[story] time Ep. 1 - LAPD CRASHFew specialty units carry an infamous reputation like CRASH (Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums). CRASH existed from 1979 to 2000. During it's lifespan, CRASH officers were embattled in cover-ups, murders, and the Rampart Scandal. While many CRASH officers were doing the right work for the right reasons, their commitment to making LA a safer city was overshadowed by controversy. Units like CRASH still have a place in modern policing. At the end of this episode, I take a few minutes to discuss the validity of specialized units used to combat unique problems. This is the first episode...2021-08-2125 minThe Modern CopThe Modern CopA Yankee in Meme Lord's Court - Talks with TenEight MemesIn the land of social media, meme pages exist as the light and laughter in an otherwise dark and depressing world filled with negativity. The doctor asked, hovering over Scott as they raced down the hospital hallway. The harsh white lights of the ER passed over Scott like a film reel.  "Yeah," Scott groaned, "bullets." In July of 2000, Scott Tipton responded to a DV call for service. Some deadbeat was stalking his girlfriend who had just broken up with him. When Scott confronted him, he was met with five .45ACP rounds from a Sig Sauer P220. A sixth plowed into the pavement inches from his head.
