Blues For Louis - Carol Grimes.﹟spoken word. A poem.
A reading of my poem. Inside my room, single bed, sink and gas ring I listened to the blues, black vinyl warm spinning heart wanting the sound in my mouth. Outside a window open in the summer heat, the street below the rowdy - dow of Earls Court Road. 1965. Saturday night down to Louis's subterranean home made mystic with leaves, sticks, stones, incense filling the air as he cooked fragrant food from Mauritius-new tastes for my tongue, his hands beating time on a drum - singing the songs I never forgotten. He played me ska records, Calypso and Blues. Seeking...

Call In The Flowers. Carol Grimes
A Princes Parade. Call in the flowers. Out of Cinque If flowers were warriors I would marshal them onto Princes Parade. An army of bluebells. A squadron of sunflowers A battalion of bees and a platoon of poppies Marching onwards from the beaches. Let us muster the mad March winds. Galvanise the moon and the stars. Shout out loud to those who turn away eyes and ears. Those who sleep walk - never heeding the warnings. The slow death of species, the rise of the seas, the earth warming - fire and flood. Heatwave and drought. On bended knees, please...

The Dance C.G. a reading
The Dance. If I could choose, I would be living under a round yellow sun, where - a red fiddler stands, with a ring in his nose- a blue violin tucked under his chin. Let the music begin. A golden green girl I would be - long indigo hair, sea shells for a necklace. I have flowers for the fiddler, afloat on the breeze in the skies. A tipsy Gypsy, twisting and turning - let the joyful dance begin. A painter arrives on a sunbeam, a violet cockerel in his arms - giddy bird whirling and twirling whilst dancers dance...

Gold In Them Hills
Gold In Them Hills Song by Ron Sexsmith I know it doesn't seem that way But maybe it's the perfect day Even though the bills are piling And maybe Lady Luck ain't smiling But if we'd only open our eyes We'd see the blessings in disguise That all the rain clouds are fountains Though our troubles seem like mountains There's gold in them hills There's gold in them hills So don't lose heart Give the day a chance to start Every now and then life says Where do you think you're going so fast We're apt to think it cruel...

My Interview with Carol Grimes
Last November I had the absolute pleasure and privilege to interview my dear friend and vocal powerhouse, Carol Grimes. In this interview we explore her decades spanning career paying particular attention to her broad range of singing styles and genres. The following, which I took from the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club website in London, gives you a bit more of an inkling of her stature as a singer and the deep respect she commands as a vocalist, especially in the UK music scene. Enjoy! Carol Grimes is one of the finest singers in...

Falling
Independent This was followed by "I Said She Said", another "confrontational" improvised piece for three pairs of women singers. By the time The Shout tore into "I Sing Because I Sing", the audience was hooked. This is a tremendous ensemble piece, with featured solos and duets. Carol Grimes was in particularly good form for her duet with Wayne Ellington. The Shout closed their fine concert with the relatively brief "Taking Leave Of A Friend". There is something intoxicating about music like this. The Shout show us that there are many new things to be done with the voice, and that...

Woman to Child. Judith Wright was a prolific Australian poet
Woman to Child. You who were darkness warmed my flesh where out of darkness rose the seed. Then all a world I made in me; all the world you hear and see hung upon my dreaming blood. There moved the multitudinous stars, and coloured birds and fishes moved. There swam the sliding continents. All time lay rolled in me, and sense, and love that knew not its beloved. O node and focus of the world; I hold you deep within that well you shall escape and not escape- that mirrors still your sleeping shape; that nurtures still your crescent cell. ...

John Porter became a producer and produced The Smiths and John Lee Hooker's comeback album in 1989. Mitchell played with Clancy and The Sandmen. It has been called a ‘vocal big band’, a ‘club choir’, a ‘vocal Stomp’, a ‘dangerous choir’, a ‘choir of Babel’ and a ‘choral phenomenon’. The sixteen singers come from very varied backgrounds – gospel, jazz, blues, contemporary classical, opera, early music– and include several accomplished improvisers. The Shout was known for it’s variety of stage concerts, music theatre and site-specific pieces. In 2001 the choir won the Time Out Award for Classical Artist of the Year. The Shout has perfor...

Into My Arms Nick Cave FROM CD MOTHER
Carol Grimes - Mother (Irregular/CG) This is a seriously fine comeback album that really Delivers! (Pun intended - remember Carol's feisty contributions to the 70s blues-soul scene with Babylon and Delivery?) Long overdue as far as Carol's many fans are concerned, Mother absolutely screams quality - though sometimes with a whisper! It was released quite a few months ago now, and met with more than a modicum of critical acclaim, mostly on the jazz circuit, yet for some reason it hadn't surfaced from my backlog of review albums until comparatively recently. And it's another one that I'm sorry to...

I saw three Ships THE SHOUT
The Shout Purcell Room John L Walters Wednesday January 5, 2005 The Guardian Originally brought together as a vehicle for the compositions of Orlando Gough and Richard Chew, the Shout's 15 singers make a virtue of their divergent backgrounds. The resulting a cappella sound - broad, rich, thrilling - has meant that the ensemble has remained unclassifiable: too awkwardly multicultural for a bench at the high table of classical music; too unpredictable to become teatime TV favourites; too tuneful to be cool. They're so good it's possible to take them for granted. In their latest touring show, A Day in the Life, populist...

© 1998 I recorded these tracks in 199/7/8 I have only listened to them for the first time in the last weeks. A rather poignant and sad story attached to the making of them. I don't even know what genre to call them in the list? They have been sitting in a cupboard in a box for many years. A rather poignant and sad story attached to the making of them. Very much improvised vocals on the tracks ..melody and on a couple of them, lyrics on the spot. I love to scat stories, but these tracks were not like the Jazz swing f...

Work. @ CD EYES WIDE OPEN
WORK. @ Sitting on a wall in somewhere town looking through a mirror See tomorrow’s hours on the ground, got nowhere to go Filling up the hours with a TV SCREEN Am I a failure? Don’t seem to fit in the worldly scene.. Why not? Why not? Looking west and looking east. Travel light, forget the beast. A new way of trying What they have is for themselves. We're uninvited to the feast.. People are dying Closed the doors, no work around I say, political lying Forget what’s yours don’t make a scene. Why not? Can they ski on but...

Over THE SHOUT

If I only had
Recorded live at Lauderdale House Highgate London. If I only had if I only had just an hour to live not one minute more I would pray for power just to spend an hour pressed against your heart until time departs and its vibrant beat would be so warm & sweet as I held you near to dispel my fear and I feel you still and next winters chill laid a barren hand upon the land If I only had if I only had just an hour to live not one minute more I would hold you while I would fill...

I'm Scared Carol Grimes. @
“ I’M SCARED “ Carol Grimes. 1980s In Bethnal Green London E2. It’s not that I’m scared Yes, I am, I won’t lie Every time I leave my room Something makes me cry inside But how can you live a life without loving - Because I'm afraid of losing Not sleeping for fear of dreaming That’s not the way to live. It’s not that I’m afraid Yes, I am I won’t lie I long to be a braver soul Fire in my eyes you’d see But how can you love, yet keep hold of your feelings? Obse...

Joyspring
Carol Grimes with Cdawn Joy spring. Clifford Brown. Lyrics Karrin Allyson Isn’t spring your favourite season, Watching the flowers blooming up out of the ground. Watching the snow melt down boy. You may dig winter time but spring is my joy. It got me feeling so glad the days are breezy. You got the time to say hello, and give a smile. Feeling real good is in style You may dig winter boy but spring is my joy. It’s something special, haven't you deserved, it makes you glad to be alive, It’s not absurd to say that Spring...
