Hi, I've been working on percussion tracks, so I took this picture (taken in souther Spain), it is not really "shapes of the grain" but the pikes are so massive and menacing that I couldn’t stop thinking as a good notation for a spicy percussive track. I see short, high transient sound anyway.
So I decided to use my new Oberheim DMX virtual instrument exclusivelly, changing pitch and sound for the toms to represent those spikes.

I decided to boost the reverb time and amount on all kick and bass drum hits and keep the manual little percussions fully dry, just leaving the ambient sound of my room that's a tad more alive than a small studio room, but still very dry. The modulations are fun and clever, I think, smooth and yet surprising and effective. I recorded several guitar takes over the year (each time I had a guitar recording session I gave this a fresh tray). I wanted this to be a "guitar" showcase, but eventually made it a full keyboards+bass+guitar+drums track.

Honestly I don't have any unbreakable rule, after so many years working on different projects with so many different people I learned to go for anything, a good idea can bu hidden behind it) .
But: on my main job for films/TV/etc I am often specifically instructed to 'record with a click track". For many reasons having a steady tempo all over a piece of music makes things easier for engineers mixing the music to the video footage, editing, cut/paste etc

This is a weird track, that started with a drum track (performed by Javier Estrella in Paris 20 years ago) for a project I was working that was scrapped and never used.
A couple of years later, when that project was confirmed dead, I removed all the other instruments and vocals and recorded a Hammond Organ and an upright bass part (again in Paris, different studio) just jamming around.
It had the charm of real instruments and real musicians playing but was really pointless.

The volume of certain pedals is a bit out of control, I kept tweaking that, but this is the only test recording I did, straight to stereo .I started earlier to set up all my pedals and practice a little bit, and recorded this impro as a test.

HI, I used a single Saw waveform playing a C note. I made it evolve using the Mod-wheel mapped to filter frequency cutoff and the knobs and faders of my midi controller mapped to tweak filters and LFO in real time.

Today I tested and old sample library and a new one I've got to compare their sounds. I used the junto prompt as inspiration for my tests.
I'm a small time alchemist, so I didn't went too far into the transformation. I just wrote a simple piano piece, I submerged the piano piece into some some string orchestra as a potion (a plugin called Fragile String Evolutions) and you can hear the piano piece already evolving. I like it because it’s the sweet blend between demented and easy to follow.
I spent the whole day recording my upright bass, bowed, for a different project. I did 16 tracks of a repetitive thing, with rhythmic delays, so I am hot with the bow.
Here I did 8 tracks, so 4 stereo pairs (everything double tracked) and added two delays, one in 1/4th and another doing 1/8th notes.

I've been "testing" some gorgeous string orchestra libraries I have because next week I have a job to do with it, mostly quiet orchestral pads and soft beds. So This junto comes at the right time to try that, I played some quiet episodes combining different sample libraries and different convolutions reverbs and some Valhalla Supermassive.
The only real instrument I played is the bowed double bass, triple-tracked.
I tried to leave some pure silence a couple of time, filling it with pure reverb and resonances, I'm not sure the silent parts are what I was aiming for...2023-10-2003 min

I often work with arpeggiators, and I like to combine their kinetic, steady pulse with ambient parts, rubatto and floating.I particularly like to add acoustic "real" instrument to and icy electronic arpeggiator synth. I do like all those contrasts : rhythmic vs floating, acoustic vs electro, tense vs relaxing cold vs warm etc
Here I had an old , unused acoustic Indian Harmonium improvisation, played rubatto, no tempo, no click.

I wrote a simple and beautiful melody inspired by a 1960's Argentinian lullaby/children song.Recorded it on piano forcing myself to pause between phrases and sometime sin unexpected places. The late great Ryuichi Sakamoto once said, when asked about his use of silence on composition, that he didn't use "silence" he did use pauses to create space for resonance. He said something like: silence is nothing, it is not music. Resonance , on the other hand is alive. Silence is not interesting, spaces and resonance are.
With that, he did influence me once again.

I unmuted the first 3 (or the last 3?) the more "synth" ones, didn't use the glitchy/noise tracks. Those 3 tracks played back with no added fx or mix sounded full Vangelis for me.
I miss and I know I will miss Vangelis Papathanassíou for the rest of my life.

Then added some textures with an instrument that was offered to me called “Aperture - Cassette Symphony” and never used, tried it here just for testing purposes.

Live studio improvisation with Miguel Yanover on sax (@yanomito), I played a nylon-string electric bass.
We jammed over a pre recorded (by me) drum track and later I overdubbed a Hammond Organ trying to save this one from the trash lid.
Still, even if I love the live sax and bass interplay, this is a great candidate to be a "forever unused" track. So I'm glad to mix it this morning and share it here.

danieldiazmusicButterfly Backwards(disquiet0580)I had some fun with this one, a wrong take on Butterflies' life cycle. They are supposed to arrive to the prettier stage in the end but my track moves backwards, from a gentle and nice pastoral in the first section to a cheesy jazz ballad, then chaotic and quite ugly electro-acoustic free-jazz third section.
It's always the same "theme" with variations, that was my actual "exercise" here.

This particular track is a pure experiment, I was recording my acoustic piano, using some mechanical rubber mutes for a different project, and did this take just for me as a test.
I didn't know what to do with it, and abandoned.
Then, I overdubbed many different instruments over the past few months, an upright bass+acoustic drums rhythm section, an unexpected old-schools synth. Later I added an orchestral section.

danieldiazmusicA Cure For Nightmares (disquiet0568)Hello, I created this one today morning (Friday 18th Nov 2022) using a felt piano library sound and synthesisers along with a descending shepard tone for the bad dream's part. (I have that as a recurring dream: me falling for ever)
There's a "nightmare" chord (some sort of C minor "alt") and then the "sweet dreams" chord (C6/9)
Around 1 minute into the piece the "sweet dreams" chords tries to get in but fails, to be eventually fully heard at the end, before the *rallentando* at 1:42 and back to a nice sleep.
