While the theme often remained similar whenever we played this bit it was our approach that would differ from night to night. Founded by our good friend and OG tND associate Jake Szufnarowski, The Rocks Off Concert Cruise would feature bands playing on one of their many boats that would venture off on a cruise through the various waterways surrounding Lower Manhattan. It made for a pretty fun time and this week’s audio cut captures some of that energy.

The cut starts in the middle of what I’d describe as a “dirty-sounding” jam; a result of the combination of fuzzed-out Juno, super-square bass tone and a fairly intense hi-hat pattern. Kingston became a regular concert destination early in the band's life. Its relative proximity to Toronto plus the large student population at Queen's University were key ingredients in helping to develop our sound through regular (and increasingly well-attended) shows there.

This gig was a late-night affair (3AM - 6AM) that occurred in the middle of our tour w Page McConnell and his "Vida Blue" band. We had already played an earlier set with them at the Orpheum Theater, so we were warmed up and ready to rock until sunrise, which we happily did.

This 22-minute piece starts with a downtempo dub-influenced groove featuring Dan playing two notes simultaneously that are a fifth apart ("in fifths" as we say in the business). Pretty sonorous stuff...
Sounds like a Moog lead with some Rhodes chords providing support, complemented by some interesting bongo work from Darren (being played while he also kept time on the kit) and a Solina-like string note held on the Juno. The cut begins with a midtempo three-chord progression and an LFO-heavy Moog line. Some of the band's early influences (Thievery Corp, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Nightmares On Wax) are evident in these types of jams, and to this day you can hear these influences whenever we delve into this style.

The clip starts out with the intro to "Receiver" - this time in a smooth downtempo style (with the bass playing the lead melody!). I'm improvising a bunch of dense jazz chords underneath that completely change the harmonic tone and character of the original melody. The cut opens with some pretty interesting harmonic interplay between the bass guitar, my right hand and my left hand! When i first listened to this concert i wondered to myself how i was going to make this harmonic relationship work out, but in true new deal style it works itself out and unfolds nicely around 1:10... i should never doubt tND!

This tour took place during a break from recording “Gone Gone Gone” and definitely displays our pent-up demand to get out of the studio and play music in front of a living, breathing audience.

Last week i discussed the restraint and patience displayed in our house grooves. This week’s cut begins with another example of that same restraint and composure, however it’s in a downtempo style.
Slower grooves played a big part in the 1998-2003 shows (they’re heavily featured throughout our first concert/record “This Is Live”) and this opening jam is a good illustration of our early-era downtempo style, albeit with the heavier approach that we began exploring in late 2001/early 2002. Playing this style of house music requires a fair bit of restraint and patience in order to let the groove settle in. Ithaca was one of the first places that tND started playing regularly - the fans took to us early on and it quickly became a preferred stop on our tour routing between 2000 and 2006. Perhaps in honour of performing in our nation's capital, I can be heard noodling the end of the "Hockey Night In Canada" theme as this cut fades in. The opening bit reminds me of some very early-era New Deal - the midtempo jams w a slightly swung feel. This time period finds us further exploring and developing our transition into bolder sounds, rawer structures and a more aggressive musical approach. The first couple minutes of this clip have a nice blend of earlier-era musical ideas coupled with middle-era sounds, groove and direction. To me, this excerpt is vintage 2007 tND. The cut opens up with "Back Off" which, at the time, was a favourite launching pad of ours to let loose in the middle section. From '99 to '02 the "Back Off" jam section was usually moderately slower and more funk-oriented, but around 2003 we started shifting into more of an early 1980's repetitive European electro-based style.
