欺哄人的外表
耶和華卻對撒母耳說：「不要看他的外貌和他身材高大，我不揀選他。因為，耶和華不像人看人：人是看外貌；耶和華是看內心。」

無論我們願意與否，都會被別人依照外表來評斷─身高和體重、容貌和衣著、工作和行為都是評判的標準。而且，理論物理學家萊納德．姆洛迪諾（Lenard Mldinw）說得沒錯，「外貌可以作為性格的判斷基礎。」好看的外表固然重要，但我們絕不能忘記「外表可能具有欺騙性」，而且「第一印象會欺騙很多人」。
當主派遣先知撒母耳去耶西家膏抹以色列家中的新王時（撒上16：1–13），先知對以利押印象極好，便以為「耶和華的受膏者必定在他面前」（第6節）。但耶和華警告撒母耳說：「不要看他的外貌和他身材高大，我不揀選他。因為，耶和華不像人看人：人是看外貌，耶和華是看內心。」（第7節）
即使是被公認在復臨教會預言解釋領域的權威─烏利亞．史密斯（Uriah Smith，1832–1903年），也會在類似的問題上栽跟頭。當密西根州的戰溪出現第一輛汽車時，幾匹馬受驚狂奔，導致一名婦女受傷。史密斯深信問題出在汽車的外型，於是設計了一個能安裝在汽車前的木製馬頭。1899年4月11日，他的「汽車外形設計」獲得了美國專利D30551 S，有效期為七年。但他的發明並沒有達到預期效果。事實證明，馬匹受驚並不是因為車輛的外形，而是因早期汽車所發出的噪音。
