پیشینۀ پیدایی این مرغ اساتیری در فرهنگ ایرانی، به بیش از سههزارسال پیش ازاین برمیگردد. آنچه از اوستا و نوشته های پهلوی برمیآید، میتوان دریافت که سیمرغ، مرغی است فراخبال که بر درختی درمانبخش بنام «ویسپوبیش» یا هرویسپ تخمک اوستا (بلندترین سرو) و دربردارندۀ تخمۀ همۀ گیاهان، آشیان دارد. در اوستا اشاره شده که این درخت در دریای «وروکاشا» یا «فراخکرت» قرار دارد. در زبانهای کهن ایرانی این درخت، «هوروپو» واگویی میشود. درختی شادیبخش است
