Ο Jean Marie Mathias Philippe Auguste, Comte de Villiers de l'Isle-Adam (1838-1889) ήταν Γάλλος ποιητής, δραματουργός, μυθιστοριογράφος και διηγηματογράφος. Ο Villiers είχε μεγάλη εκτίμηση κατά τη διάρκεια της ζωής του, επηρεάζοντας μεταξύ άλλων τον W.B. Yeats, και σήμερα θεωρείται σημαντική προσωπικότητα στην ιστορία της γαλλικής λογοτεχνίας. Ο Arbues ασχολήθηκε με την υποχρεωτική βάπτιση των Εβραίων και χρησιμοποιούσε δικαστικά βασανιστήρια για να διασφαλίσει ότι οι μεταστροφές ήταν ειλικρινείς.
