文化の台湾文化の台湾 - 2020-07-29_台湾初の先史冒険ファンタジー小説「風暴之子」登場台湾は歴史の中で、17世紀に中国大陸から漢民族が移住してくる前から多くの原住民族が居住していました。既に伝統的な文化がなくなってしまった民族もありますが、現在、台湾政府が16の民族を認定、また最近では多くの部族たちが失った言語や祭りの儀式などの伝統文化の再復興に努めていて、将来的にはさらに多くの部族が認定されていくと思われます。そんな原住民族の文化や、それよりも前、文献で知られる以前の時代、“先史”の文物などを保存、研究している考古博物館「国立台湾先史文化博物館」があります。
その「国立台湾先史文化博物館」がこのたび、作家・葛葉さんとタッグを組み、台湾初の台湾先史をベースにした冒険ファンタジー小説「風暴之子（嵐の子）」を生み出しました。
そもそものきっかけは、今年（2020年）が卑南遺跡の発見から40年、そして先史博物館の開館からもうすぐ20年になるとあって、博物館の役割として、これまで考古学者たちが積み重ねてきたこの土地の発掘や研究の内容を表していこう目的から。
「国立台湾先史文化博物館」は、1980年7月に現在の台湾鉄道台東駅の建設工事中に、先史時代の遺物を相当数含む“卑南遺跡”が発見されたことから建設計画が始まりました。
土の中からたくさんの石の棺桶“石棺”と、棺桶の中から精巧で美しい副葬品が現れ、注目を集めました。それから10年の間、当時、国立台湾大学人類学部の教授だった宋文薰氏と連照美氏が考古学チームを率いて視察を行い、台湾新石器時代文明の発掘の中で最大の遺跡であることがわかり、この場所を考古遺跡野外博物館という形で保存するのが良いとの提案から「国立台湾先史文化博物館」が誕生したのです。
遺跡の発見から40年、そして博物館の開館からもうすぐ20年、この研究成果をどう表そうかという中で、今回、現代における考古学の普及と推進のため、革新的な試みとして、出版社とコラボレーションして、台湾先史を背景としたストーリーの本を打ち出すことになったそうです。
たしかに、一般的なファンタジー小説というと、妖精や魔女などが登場する西洋の伝統的なものベースにした小説をイメージするかもしれません。しかもこれまで、台湾本土をベースにしたファンタジーはありませんでした。そういったことから台湾先史をベースにした冒険ファンタジー小説「風暴之子（嵐の子）」が誕生。時代設定は今から3000年以上前の台湾島。卑南文化をベースに、台湾石器時代の、美しい石を素材として彫刻や研磨によって作られた工芸品である“玉器”の一つ、「人獸形玉玦」と呼ばれる人獣の形をした腰帯などの着衣に吊り下げる玉製の装身具から物語が生まれています。
暴風雨の中、一艘のカヌーが波に激しく揺さぶられます。しかし沈むことはありません。そのカヌーには意識のない子供が。この暴風雨の中、奇跡的に生き延びた少年は、古語で「風」を意味する自身の名のもとに、異国の部族に生まれ変わり、古代の冒険を始めることになる─。
ファンタジー文学を生み出すには大きな想像力が不可欠となりますが、世界観を作り出すには、様々な考察が必要となります。作家の葛葉さんは、この小説を作りにあたって、「やはり、ベースに多くの出土品が出てくるので、小説の世界観をめちゃくちゃに書くことはできない」と、当時の社会状況や、集落文化といった様々な考察が必要だったので図書館でたくさんの参考資料を探したそうです。そのため、創作に費やした1年半のうち、大半が資料の読み込みだったそうです。
「国立台湾先史文化博物館」からオファーを受けた後、彼女はいくつかの創作の概要を検討。「プユマ遺跡から出土した文物は呼び水で、いかにしてファンタジー文学の形で台湾島の先史住民文化を表現するかを考えた」そうです。
彼女は、「プユマ遺跡の出土品の中で玉器は大きな割合を占めていて、先史社会の生活は農業がメインだ」と解説。資料から、玉器は信仰や儀式のシンボルとして使われ、天気次第の農業と結び付けられていることから、彼女は、当時の住民たちにとって最大の敵のひとつは天災だったんだと考えました。
そこで、天災と「人獸形玉玦」を結びつけたそうです。また、卑南文化の本には雲豹（ウンピョウ）の伝説があり、これらの要素を結びつけ、想像力をもってひとつの台湾先史文明の世界観を作り出し、ストーリーを生み出したそうです。
実は葛葉さんにとって「風暴之子（嵐の子）」は2作目のファンタジー作品です。葛葉さんは「前作では都市のファンタジー文学を書いた。今回の先史文化の世界観とは真逆のもので、創作する上では楽だった」とし、「今作「風暴之子（嵐の子）」は、本当に大変だった。なぜなら新しい世界観を作り出さなくてはならないけれども、史実とかけ離れることはできないから。」と笑いながら語りました。
葛葉さんは、「風暴之子（嵐の子）」の創作を通して、台湾先史文明をより深く理解することができた。台湾の初期史の教材で台湾先史文化について語られているのは本のわずかであり、私が学生の頃、教科書で台湾先史文化が紹介されることは多くなかった」とし、「今回の経験は、私にとって台湾先史文明をベースにしたファンタジー文学の新境地を開いてくれた。今あるファンタジー文学の世界観は多くが大陸型のストーリーが多く、島の目線のものは少ない。なので、もし台湾島系のファンタジーを作ることができれば素晴らしいことだと思っていた」と語りました。そして、「風暴之子（嵐の子）」のストーリーが、台湾の読者によりこの土地の古くからの記憶を理解してもらい、さらに多くの人に台湾先史文化をもっと知ってもらいたいとしています。
考古学をベースにした本…と聞くと、確かになかなか興味のある人以外は手に取りにくいところですが、この本は、考古学に興味がある人だけでなく、ファンタジー小説や冒険ストーリーが好きな人にも楽しみながら、台湾先史の文化を知り、身近に感じることができる一冊となっています。
なお、この「風暴之子（嵐の子）」は、「国立台湾先史博物館」と、ファンタジー作家・葛葉さんに加え、挿絵を台湾の有名なイラストレーター・nofiが手がけており、台湾ファンタジー文学の新たなスタイルが完成。すでに幅広い層から注目を集めています。
この一冊をきっかけに、台湾先史文化に興味を持つ人も現れるかもしれませんし、またこれからこの本のように台湾の古くからの文化をベースとしたファンタジー作品が出てくるかもしれませんね。
