Best known for publishing Samuel Beckett's novels and poetry, he brought much of the most innovative European literature of the 20th century to an English-speaking audience, ultimately won a landmark obscenity trial over Hubert Selby Jr's 'Last Exit to Brooklyn' and has inspired several generations of exciting writers and publishers.
