A Giant Crypto Grift: Xbox Chief on His New Blockchain Thriller and Why Web3 Still Matters
In the midst of today’s AI hysteria, have we forgotten about blockchain technology and the seductive Web3 promise of decentralization? Robbie Bach, longtime Xbox chief and lieutenant of former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, certainly hasn’t. In his new novel, The Blockchain Syndicate, the prescient Bach imagines not only a giant political crypto grift, but also warns about the siren song of Distributed Autonomous Organizations (DAOs). No, blockchain might not be as sexy or lucrative as LLMs these days - but Web3 still matters even if, as Bach suggests, its promise of a decentralized netw...

Episode 2547: Paul Elie on Art, Faith and Sex in the 1980s
How religious was the 80s creative scene? Very. At least according to Paul Elie, whose intriguing new cultural history, The Last Supper, charts the art, faith, sex and controversy of the 1980s. Elie argues that this was the age of what calls “crytpo-religious” art - a intensely creative decade in which religious imagery and motifs were often detached from conventional belief. Beginning in 1979 with with Dylan’s “Christian” album Slow Train Coming and ending with Sinéad O'Connor's notorious SNL tearing up of a photo of the Pope, Elie presents the 80s as a "post-secular" era where religion remained culturally...

Diorama Revisited: The BodyWorlds Exhibit of Guenther von Hagens and the Artistes Macabre
This podcast discusses the BodyWorlds exhibits of Guenther von Hagens who has channelled the old 18thC impresarios of anatomical dioramas. Von Hagens has laid a new narrative of death that has insinuated the human body (in this case the plastinated body) into the public museums but not without considerable ethical controversy. It is perhaps no accident that Germany with its dark history has proved the most popular country for von Hagens’ shows. These too have spawned much of a reinvigoration of body art which also channels the movement led by Yoko Ono in the 1960’s, that morphed into the Youn...

This podcast traces the beginnings of X-rays as the new objective medium to demonstrate the interior of the body, its latest transparency that has given way to the ultrasound, the CAT scan, the MRI and the PET scan. With each there had been a rapid public acceptance but also a social expectation of use that has seen the more complex machinery devolve into more peripheral environments somewhat at the expense of the trusted clinical examination of the patient first defined in its exactness by Boerhaave and Bichat and by Laennec’ s invention of the stethoscope. The Cup, part two
At the Last Supper, a cup is passed after Jesus says words of blessing and then pronounces, “This is my blood of the new covenant…”. Later, in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prays that “this cup” may be taken away. Cups are used in different ways throughout the Bible, and in this chapter, we see a cup of blessing and a cup of wrath. Both are significant to know the depths of God’s love for us and our salvation. This sermon is from last year's Good Friday service. At the end, there is an organ postlude, "Echo" by J.S. Bach, perf...
