About Time - with Chris Nichols
The Roger Kneebone One: Surgery, improvisation and the infinite richness of knowing
In this episode, Chris Nichols talks to Professor Roger Kneebone, who has been a surgeon, a GP, a medical educator, a harpsicord player (and maker) and explorer across many frontiers. Roger and Chris first met during Roger’s engagement fellowship at The Wellcome Trust, and from there dived into many adventures in looking at the world through richly different lenses. Roger’s book, Expert, is one of Chris’ favourite pieces of writing on the subject of expertise, and in particular the improvisational edges that it embraces. This episode includes a treasury of references and links, kindly provided by Roger, which w...

Fresh From The Esky
S2 Episode 18: When the rain tumbles down in July.
Actually recorded on the first day of August, the title just seemed appropriate with the rain tumbling down on the uninsulated tin roof of the outdoor bar that is the "Fresh From the Esky" studio. Adding to that appropriateness is our guest Joey " Pentridge" Kneebone, you can just see him sitting at Slim's "Three Rivers hotel", around a campfire of "Gidgee Coal" , on the back of a horse thinking he is the "Man from Snowy River" and he sure would be cranky if the "Pub had no Beer". Whether driving a truck, or fixing it, mustering on horse back...

Covid -19 – Mutations are normal
This week the UK Health secretary raised concerns over a new variant of SARS- CoV-2 currently spreading across Europe. Viruses mutate all the time so it’s no surprise that a new form of the one causing Covid -19 would emerge. However, virologist Ravi Gupta who analysed the new strain says we need to be weary in case future strains mutate in ways that could overcome vaccines.Immunologist Akiko Iwasaki is part of a team looking at the impact of Covid -19 on our immune system. Her research has uncovered autoantibodies linked to infection with the virus. Th...

RAVES clarifies post-operative radiotherapy in prostate cancer
A big week for prostate cancer in the Lancet! No less than three much-anticipated randomised trials to investigate the role of adjuvant vs salvage radiotherapy in prostate cancer, were published in the Lancet and Lancet Oncology this week, plus a pre-planned meta-analysis of all three. RAVES, RADICALS-RT, and GETUG-AFU 17, each examined the issue of post-operative radiotherapy in men at risk of biochemical recurrence, and randomised those men to receive radiotherapy prior to PSA recurrence (adjuvant), or at the first sign of PSA recurrence (early salvage). There were some differences in patient population and trial design, but the overall message...
