Ep1: Is AI beating human intelligence? with Dr. Anima Anandkumar
Making machines intelligent has been the pursuit of inventors for ages. Pioneering mathematician Alan Turing developed a method to test machine intelligence in the 1950s. Seven decades later, no clever algorithm or complex machine has passed the Turing test. But signs of artificial intelligence surpassing human intelligence are visible in several quarters. Will this be the generation that sees AI triumphing over human intelligence? That's the question John will be exploring with Dr. Anima in this inaugural podcast.Guest: Dr Anima Anandkumar is the Bren Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the California Institute of...

GaLore: Memory-Efficient LLM Training by Gradient Low-Rank Projection
Training Large Language Models (LLMs) presents significant memory challenges, predominantly due to the growing size of weights and optimizer states. Common memory-reduction approaches, such as low-rank adaptation (LoRA), add a trainable low-rank matrix to the frozen pre-trained weight in each layer, reducing trainable parameters and optimizer states. However, such approaches typically underperform training with full-rank weights in both pre-training and fine-tuning stages since they limit the parameter search to a low-rank subspace and alter the training dynamics, and further, may require full-rank warm start. In this work, we propose Gradient Low-Rank Projection (GaLore), a training strategy that allows full-parameter learning...

Stopping superbugs: antimicrobial resistance and the race for new antibiotics
Since the discovery of penicillin in the early 20th century, we’ve seen the risk of minor infections virtually disappear. But after years of antibiotics being abused and overused, we now face a silent pandemic where the treatments we rely on no longer work. The potential scale of antimicrobial resistance, or AMR, is staggering, and there is a lack of awareness of just how dangerous it could be. Alisha speaks to Dr Anand Anandkumar, an engineer turned biotechnologist, to correct the misconceptions around AMR, and discover what we can do about it. We’ll also hear from John Ka...

But because bacteria evolve and mutate so quickly, many drugs are powerless against new strains. The world needs new and better antibiotics. In this episode of One World, One Health, Anand Anandkumar, co-founder and chief...

Melanie is solo this week talking with Anima Anandkumar, a Caltech Bren professor and director of ML research at NVIDIA. We touch on tensors, their use, and how they relate to TensorFlow. Anima also details the work she does with NVIDIA and how they are helping to advance machine learning through hardware and software. Our main discussion centers around AI and machine learning research conferences, specifically the Neural Information Processing Systems conference (commonly referred to as NIPS) and the reason they have rebranded.NIPS originally started as a small conference at Caltech. As deep learning became more and...

Tensor Operations for Machine Learning with Anima Anandkumar - TWiML Talk #142
In this episode of our TrainAI series, I sit down with Anima Anandkumar, Bren Professor at Caltech and Principal Scientist with Amazon Web Services. Anima joined me to discuss the research coming out of her “Tensorlab” at CalTech. In our conversation, we review the application of tensor operations to machine learning and discuss how an example problem–document categorization–might be approached using 3 dimensional tensors to discover topics and relationships between topics. We touch on multidimensionality, expectation maximization, and Amazon products Sagemaker and Comprehend. Anima also goes into how to tensorize neural networks and apply our understanding of tensor algebra to do pe...

Deep Learning That's Easy to Implement and Easy to Scale
In this episode of the Data Show, I spoke with Anima Anandkumar, a leading machine learning researcher, and currently a principal research scientist at Amazon. I took the opportunity to get an update on the latest developments on the use of tensors in machine learning. Most of our conversation centered around MXNet—an open source, efficient, scalable deep learning framework. I’ve been a fan of MXNet dating back to when it was a research project out of CMU and UW, and I wanted to hear Anandkumar’s perspective on its recent progress as a framework for enterprises and practicing data s...

Talking Machines
The History of Machine Learning from the Inside Out
In episode five of Talking Machines, we hear the first part of our conversation with Geoffrey Hinton (Google and University of Toronto), Yoshua Bengio (University of Montreal) and Yann LeCun (Facebook and NYU). Ryan introduces us to the ideas in tensor factorization methods for learning latent variable models (which is both a tongue twister and and one of the new tools in ML). To find out more on the topic, the paper Tensor decompositions for learning latent variable models is a good place to start. You can also take a look at the work of Daniel Hsu, Animashree Anandkumar and S...
