From Royalty to Revolution: Dr. Johnnetta Cole carries on a legacy of leadership
Dr. Johnnetta Cole’s legacy is nearly impossible to capture in a single conversation. As the first Black woman president of Spelman College, a civil rights activist, an anthropologist, and a leader in education and social justice, she has shaped institutions, movements and minds. But she is also deeply rooted in Jacksonville, tracing her lineage back to enslaved African princess Anta Majigin Njai and Florida’s first Black millionaire, Abraham Lincoln Lewis. From growing up under Jim Crow to sitting at the seats of power, Dr. Cole shares her insights on race, education and the continuing fight for j...

CYKIAE Season 014 Part 2. What’s Your Purpose, Your Meaning - But I Digress.
In my last programme I spoke about Holocaust survivor, Viktor Frankl, his book “The Meaning of Life”, and the Holocaust. Talking about the Holocaust, as if everyone knew what I was talking about, was a big call because a lot of people today don’t know what the Holocaust was. Who caused the Holocaust – was it the Jews like many younger people think? Let me briefly tell you about how the Holocaust came to be known to the world from the end of World War II until today.Tag words: Viktor Frankl; The Meaning of Life; Holocaust; World Wa...

Rebound: How Artis Gilmore Defeated The Odds and Helped Unify The City
Artis Gilmore’s journey is the definition of perseverance. Before he was a Hall of Famer, before he was an NBA star, he was a kid growing up in a segregated town in rural Florida, living amid poverty and racial terror. But basketball was his salvation. His size, drive and commitment led him to Jacksonville University, and eventually to the school’s unprecedented – and unreplicated – NCAA championship final. He would later go on to perform as one the most dominant centers in basketball history. But he recalls his time playing in Jacksonville as not just a highlight of his life, bu...

Shining a new light on Rudolf Vrba, the Canadian who escaped from Auschwitz

Vrba is credited with saving the lives of 200,000 Hungarian Jews, who would have otherwise been deported to their deaths that summer. But the killing of more...

Canada's Schindler: Meet the man who gave 79 Jewish orphans a new life on Canadian soil
Few Canadians know the name Morris Saxe. He was a Jewish dairy farmer who lived in Georgetown, Ontario, having moved to Canada in 1902. He was a hard worker and one of the founders of Beth Tzedec Congregation in Toronto, but his greatest accomplishment came in the 1920s. He convinced the Canadian government, still quite anti-Semitic at the time, to open its doors to 79 Jewish teens from one particular orphanage in Poland. But there was one catch: all the orphans had to train to become farmers. Saxe's story is so inspiring that one author just recently published a young-adult book in...
