Kitaab Ghar with Ari11. इब्नेबतूती - दिव्य प्रकाश दुबे (ibne-Batuti – Divya Prakash Dubey) | Kitaab Ghar Hindi Booksकिताब घर में इस हफ्ते चर्चा का विषय है दिव्य प्रकाश दुबे की किताब "इब्नेबतूती"। ये कहानी है एक प्रेम कथा जो कई प्रेम कथाओं से मिलकर बनी लगती है, जिनमें माँ बेटे का प्रेम हमेशा केंद्र में रहता है, और बाकी प्रेम कथाएं आस पास चलती रहती हैं, मुख्य कहानी में घुलती मिलती रहती हैं, पुराने रिश्तों को एक नए लेंस से देखा हो जैसे। एक विशेष बात जो पाठक को सोचने को प्रेरित कर दे कि हमारे माता पिता भी कभी युवा रहेंगे होंगे, उन्होंने भी अपनी जवानी में प्रेम किया होगा, उनके भी शौक रहे होंगे। जैसे इस किताब के मुख्य पात्र राघव का ये जानना कि उसकी माँ का भी कभी कोई बॉयफ्रेंड रहा है। और ये बात इस किताब से समर्पण से ही स्पष्ट हो जाती है – “माँ जो कभी बीस बरस की लड़की थी, उसके नाम”। दिव्य प्रकाश की भाषा हमेशा की तरह सहज सरल है, बिल्कुल आम बोलचाल की हिंदी। कई बार बहुत गहरी बातें बड़े कम शब्दों में कह जाते हैं, जिसे कोई पाठक पढ़ के आगे तो बढ़ जाता है, लेकिन फिर रुकता है, पलटकर आता है और सोचता है कि ओ तेरी, लेखक ये क्या कह गए! जैसे ये देखिए - “सुबह की चाय में सुबह रहती थी”, देखने पर कुछ विशेष नहीं, लेकिन सोचें तो बहुत कुछ। तसल्ली की चाय पीने वालों से पूछकर देखिए :-)और किताब का नाम, इब्नेबतूता को तो लोग जानते हैं लेकिन इब्नेबतूती? ये बिल्कुल नया शब्द है जिसका वैसे तो कोई अर्थ नहीं, लेकिन इस किताब को पढ़ने के बाद शायद हम इस शब्द का प्रयोग भी करना शुरू कर दें क्योंकि ये किताब बता देती है कि ये शब्द कहानी के लिए कितना उचित शीर्षक है।My other Hindi poetry podcasts: Bachchan’s Madhushala: https://open.spotify.com/show/3sTh2uvc4Ze9rS2ta8xdQpJal Tarang: https://open.spotify.com/show/45OWiFomkPFOMNWhjmKld3In this episode of Kitaab Ghar, we are discussing Divya Prakash Dubey's book "Ibnebtooti". We started with ‘Champa’, who he called ‘Dryad of the Trees’. In this episode, we are talking about Bachchan’s lesser known first wife ‘Shyama’.
पिछले अंक से हमने शुरुआत की थी एक चर्चा की – बच्चन बाबू के जीवन में कुछ महत्वपूर्ण स्त्रियों पर। सबसे पहले बात की थी चम्पा की, जो उनके बचपन के मित्र कर्कल की पत्नी थी और उन्होंने बच्चन बाबू को किस तरह प्रभावित किया। इसी सिलसिले को आगे बढ़ाते हुए, आज बात करते हैं श्यामा की।

भँवर में पड़ा-सा हृदय घूमता है, - बदन पर लहर पर लहर चल रही है।
न तुम सो रही हो, न मैं सो रहा हूँ, - मगर यामिनी बीच में ढल रही है।
उठा करता था मन में प्रश्न - कि जाने क्या होगा उस पार
निवारण करने में सन्देह - मज़हबी पोथे थे बेकार
चले तुम, पूछा, हैं! किस ओर? - कहा बस तुमने एक ज़बान
तुम्हें थी जिसकी खोज तलाश - उसी का करने अनुसंधान
श्यामा रानी थी पड़ी रोग की शय्या पर - दो सौ सोलह दिन कठिन कष्ट में थे बीते,
संघर्ष मौत से बचने और बचाने का - था छिड़ा हुआ, या हम जीतें या वह जीते।
एक समय संतुष्ट बहुत था पा मैं थोड़ी-सी हाला,
भोला-सा था मेरा साकी, छोटा-सा मेरा प्याला,
छोटे-से इस जग की मेरे स्वर्ग बलाएँ लेता था,
विस्तृत जग में, हाय, गई खो मेरी नन्ही मधुशाला!।१०८।

के साथ (as in rough edges), और वही इनकी कविता का आकर्षण हो जाता है।

He speaks his words with an uneasiness, restlessness, a roughness, and this becomes the attraction of his poetry - the same thing is reflected in his songs.

कुछ और सवाल कर लेते हैं
कुछ सरकार से सवाल कर लेते हैं,
कुछ नेताओं से सवाल कर लेते हैं
सवाल का जवाब तो हमें नहीं आता
हाँ जवाब में सवाल करना खूब है भाता
इसलिए बस सवाल कर लेते हैं
हम सब को सवाल करने का तो खूब शौक है, लेकिन हम जवाब देने से क्यूँ इतना कतरा जाते हैं?

Jal Tarang - stories, poetry, musingsशहर बहारें, पंछी गाते, इन दिनों / Shahar Baharein, Panchhi Gaate - a happy poem from pandemicHere is another poem from the Corona / COVID times, this one from the initial days of the lockdown in India in 2020 when the pandemic brought the world to a screeching halt. While a lot of people suffered but at the same time, our cities suddenly started breathing again. Those clean blue skies, quiet roads, no pollution in the air, and the day long bird songs inspired this poem.
Here are a few lines:
आसमान भी साफ और नीला है दिखता इन दिनों
धूल की भी चल रही अब छुट्टियाँ हैं इन दिनों
शाम भी रुकने लगी है एक तसल्ली चाय पर
वक़्त को भी मिल रहा है वक़्त सारा इन दिनों

With this episode, we are starting a series about the women in Bachchan’s life and how they influenced the life and poetry of our Kaviraj.
पिछले अंक में कुछ किस्से सुनाए थे मधुशाला के शान्ति पाठ के, एक किस्सा राही मासूम रज़ा की कहानी टोपी शुक्ला से, कुछ बातें हिंदी के अक्खड़ कवि उग्र जी के बारे में, और एक कहानी अंग्रेज़ी कवि शैली और कीट्स की। आज से बात शुरू करते हैं बच्चन बाबू के जीवन में आने वाली स्त्रियों की और किस तरह उन्होंने हमारे कविराज के जीवन और उनकी कविताओं को प्रभावित किया।

Jal Tarang - stories, poetry, musingsबच्चन: है अंधेरी रात पर दीपक जलाना कब मना है / Bachchan: Andhere ka Deepak (Hindi poems)This episode was first recorded during COVID pandemic, so the first poem serves as a warning message for people to be careful. The title of the poem is – “Mat Nikal” (मत निकल - Don’t go out), a poem written by Sharad Gupta Ji but wrongly recognized as written by Harivansh Rai Bachchan, probably because of its similarity with Agnipath (अग्निपथ). However, every word of the poem is spot-on for the situation during pandemic, like this:
संतुलित व्यवहार कर, बन्द तू किवाड़ कर
घर में बैठ, इतना भी तू ना मचल
मत निकल, मत निकल, मत निकल
Then we read a poem actually written by Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan – Andhere ka Deepak (अंधेरे का दीपक - a lamp in the dark). This is a satirical poem written by Om Prakash Aditya back in the day, always relevant and a reminder of Harishankar Parsai's writings. The poem uses Donkey as a symbol of all that was wrong in our politics and society in general. I have added a couple of my couplets to the original poem, which are relevant in today's time :-) There is also some commentary on how good Donkeys actually are.

“यदि यूरोप में पुनर्जागरण हुआ, तो भारत में यह एक सतत प्रक्रिया थी। यह मानना उचित नहीं है कि उस समय भारत सो रहा था। अंग्रेजों के आने के बाद कुछ स्थायी परिवर्तन हुए। एक ओर उन्होंने भारतीयों को हीन भावना दी, वहीं दूसरी ओर उन्होंने कुछ सोई हुई सभ्यता को भी जगाया। भारत ने महसूस किया कि उनकी संस्कृति हजारों साल पुरानी है, लेकिन इसका मतलब यह नहीं है कि वह आधुनिक दुनिया से परे है। भारत के पास ऐसे अनेक स्रोत हैं, जिन्होंने आधुनिक विश्व के निर्माण में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई है। चाहे वह कला हो, विज्ञान हो, धर्म हो, संगीत हो या शिक्षा हो - भारत ने एक शताब्दी के दौरान हर क्षेत्र में ऊंचाई हासिल की। प्राय: इसे बंगाल पुनर्जागरण भी कहा जाता है, लेकिन यह केवल बंगाल तक ही सीमित नहीं था। न ही यह किसी एक धर्म या एक जाति तक सीमित था। यह एक अखिल भारतीय परिघटना थी।“
Praveen Jha's book "Renaissance" is a brief account of the history of the Indian Renaissance around 1900, detailing the major movements and thinkers of the Indian Renaissance (Vivekananda, Dayanand, Tagore, etc.), as well as its Social, economic and cultural impacts are also discussed.
If Renaissance took place in Europe, in India it was a continuous process. It is not appropriate to believe that India was sleeping at that time. Some permanent changes took place after the arrival of the British. On one hand, he gave Indians an inferiority complex, while on the other hand, he also awakened some sleeping civilization. India realized that their culture is thousands of years old, but that does not mean that it is beyond the modern world.
India has many such sources which have played an important role in the formation of the modern world. Be it art, science, religion, music or education – India achieved heights in every field during a century. Often it is also called Bengal Renaissance, but it was not limited to Bengal only. Nor was it limited to any one religion or caste. This was a pan-India phenomenon.

In today’s episode, we move on from youth towards the sunset of life and a story from the passing away of Bachchan’s first wife – Shyama.
पिछले अंक में बात की थी जीवन की अवस्थाओं पर, विशेषकर मानव जीवन में यौवन के महत्व की, यौवन या तारुण्य क्या होता है, उसका रंग रूप क्या होता है, और सुनाई थी यौवन के भाव की कुछ कविताएं। आज बात करते हैं जीवन में यौवन से आगे की अवस्थाओं पर, अंतिम पड़ाव पर, और एक बात उनकी पहली पत्नी श्यामा की मृत्यु के बाद के दिनों से।

Today let us tell you an incident about the Bachchan couple's road accident and how his poetry saved them.

Circa 1925, Champa who was Karkal’s wife, and a dream-world that a young Harivansh and his best friend Karkal had weaved together with Champa, followed by two tragic deaths.

Madhushala: exploring the soul of Bachchan's timeless poetryBonus Episode - अभी तो मैं जवान हूँ | Bachchan's Comic Introduction / Robert Browning Rabbi Ben Ezra (Madhushala)In 1954, when Bachchan ji landed in Mumbai after sailing for 18 days on his return journey from London, there was a Kavi Goshthi organized in his honor. He was asked to recite some poems, but he recited a fun parody instead, rhyming with the names of his most popular poems :-) such as -
मैं हूं बच्चन जी मस्ताना, लिखता हूँ मस्ती का गाना,
मैंने खोली है मधुशाला, जिसमें रहती है मधुबाला!
Then we also talk about Robert Browning’s “Rabbi Ben Ezra” and Hafeez Jalandhari’s “Abhi to main jawaan hoon” while talking about different stages of life.

Madhushala: exploring the soul of Bachchan's timeless poetryBonus Episode - Madhushala aur Baat Bareilly Ki | बात बरेली की और मधुशालाBareilly has played a very important and dramatic role in Bachchan’s life. Circa 1938, it’s just been about a year since the death of Shyama, the first wife of Shri Harivansh Rai Bachchan. He has not written any new poem since her passing but attends poetry events (Kavi Sammelan) for his own peace (स्वांत: सुखाय). One such invite came from Bareilly and this is where he comes across an admirer of his poetry, who commits suicide in front of the very train that Mr Bachchan was travelling on.
गिर-गिर टूटे घट-प्याले, - बुझ दीप गए सब क्षण में,
सब चले किए सिर नीचे - ले अरमानों की झोली;
गूँजी मदिरालय भर में - लो, ‘चलो, चलो’ की बोली!
But, can his poetry be termed ‘Morbid’, or be held responsible to driving one to end his/her life? Madhushala does not urge people to do this, even in its sadness, some such lines:

Madhushala: exploring the soul of Bachchan's timeless poetryBonus Episode - OSHO Rajneesh and Bachchan's Madhushala | ओशो रजनीश और बच्चन की मधुशालाCirca 1950s to 1970s – That there was a bond between Acharya Rajneesh aka OSHO and Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan is not a common knowledge. There were similarities between Osho’s preaching and the messages from Madhushala even though Madhushala was written when Osho was a toddler. It is said that he was inspired by Madhushala and other poems of Bachchan ji, which is reflected in his sermons and at his Ashrams. Such as – धर्मग्रन्थ सब जला चुकी है जिसके अन्तर की ज्वाला, कर सकती है आज उसी का स्वागत मेरी मधुशाला!
Or this when it comes to Dhyaan or Meditation - ध्यान किए जा मन में सुमधुर सुखकर, सुन्दर साक़ी का, और चलाचल, पथिक, न तुझको दूर लगेगी मधुशाला!
Or this when it comes to dancing in a state of trance – आँख चार हों जिसकी मेरे साकी से दीवाना हो, पागल बनकर नाचे वह जो आए मेरी मधुशाला

In the previous episode, we shared the story of ‘Chamma’ (Lachhminiya aka Chamarin Amma), who was she to newly born Harivansh Rai and what effect she had on his poetry, written much later. There was another story of Bachchan’s birth in ‘Mool Nakshatra’ and what happened because of that! Today we start with some poetic banter between Ghalib, Iqbal and others. There is also a story of Professor Amarnath Jha and how is he related to Dr. Bachchan.
पिछले अंक में हमने बात की थी की बच्चन जी के बचपन में लछमिनियाँ कौन थी, उन्हें चम्मा क्यूँ कहते थे और उनका बच्चन जी पर क्या असर रहा, और एक बात की थी उनके मूल नक्षत्र में जन्म होने की – आज शुरुआत करते हैं ग़ालिब और इकबाल की कुछ बातों से – ग़ालिब कहते हैं:
"ज़ाहिद शराब पीने दे मस्जिद में बैठ कर - या वो जगह बता दे जहाँ ख़ुदा न हो"

In the previous episode, we discussed the story behind the name “Harivansh Rai” and of a bad experience Bachchan had as a kid for being a Kayasth, and how this experience impacted his poetry. We continue talking about some of Bachchan’s childhood memories in this episode, especially who was Chamarin Amma (aka Chamma) in Bachchan's life.
पिछले अंक में हमने बात की थी कि कविराज बच्चन जी का नाम हरिवंश राय कैसे रखा गया और सुनाया था एक किस्सा उनके बचपन का जब कायस्थ होने की वजह से उनका एक बार अपमान हुआ था और इसका असर उन पर क्या पड़ा! आज उसी सिलसिले में बच्चन जी के बचपन की कुछ और बातें। मधुशाला में कई कविताओं में देखने को मिलता है कि कैसे मधुशाला धर्म जाति और समाज के रूढ़िवादी रीति रिवाजों से दूर रहने का संदेश देती है, जैसे ये कविता सुनिए -
कोई भी हो शेख नमाज़ी या पंडित जपता माला, बैर भाव चाहे जितना हो मदिरा से रखनेवाला,
एक बार बस मधुशाला के आगे से होकर निकले, देखूँ कैसे थाम न लेती दामन उसका मधुशाला! (51)
And -
पथिक बना मैं घूम रहा हूँ, सभी जगह मिलती हाला, सभी जगह मिल जाता साकी, सभी जगह मिलता प्याला,
मुझे ठहरने का, हे मित्रों, कष्ट नहीं कुछ भी होता, मिले न मंदिर, मिले न मस्जिद, मिल जाती है मधुशाला (47)
And -
बजी नफ़ीरी और नमाज़ी भूल गया अल्लाताला, गाज गिरी, पर ध्यान सुरा में मग्न रहा पीनेवाला,
शेख, बुरा मत मानो इसको, साफ़ कहूँ तो मस्जिद को, अभी युगों तक सिखलाएगी ध्यान लगाना मधुशाला (49)

पिछले अंक में हमने बात की थी कि मधुशाला के संदर्भ में बच्चन जी शिव की प्रतिमा के बारे में क्या कहते हैं, बुखार के बारे में बच्चन जी के विचारों की और जीवन में राग और आग के महत्व की – आज बात करते हैं कि जब गांधी जी से लोगों ने मधुशाला की शिकायत की तो उनकी क्या प्रतिक्रिया थी।

From the grapes of experiences and imagination - the poet has created this wine called Haala and welcomes the world to his House of Wine, aka Madhushala.
मृदु भावों के अंगूरों की आज बना लाया हाला, प्रियतम, अपने ही हाथों से आज पिलाऊँगा प्याला,
पहले भोग लगा लूँ तेरा फिर प्रसाद जग पाएगा, सबसे पहले तेरा स्वागत करती मेरी मधुशाला ।।१।
And then the poet who has sacrificed the sweetness of his life, will shower the joys of Madhushala on the readers / listeners of his poem.
प्यास तुझे तो, विश्व तपाकर पूर्ण निकालूँगा हाला, एक पाँव से साकी बनकर नाचूँगा लेकर प्याला,

December 1933 - the very first public recitation of Madhushala, at Shivaji Hall – Kashi University and the magical effect it had on the audience. First day was common for several poets but by the end of the day, Madhushala became such a rage that everybody wanted a day dedicated only to Bachchan and his Madhushala – the poem had a mesmerizing effect on her audience.
