Ep. 558: ELCA Sues Member Congregation, Preventing Financial Fraud, Agape Flights, BSF Moves HQ
On today’s program, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has sued a small church in California for legal title to its property—but that small church is fighting back. We’ll have details. And, a hacker drained $85,000 from an Oklahoma church’s bank account. Then in North Dakota, a woman was indicted for stealing over $600,000 from a church she worked at. Both cases highlight why ordinary access to church finances can equal extraordinary losses—and the need for tightening protocols. Also, six months ago, Barnabas Aid came under scrutiny for accusations of financial mismanagement. Now, under...

What did the author of the Epistle of Barnabas believe about the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? This week's episode explores this important early second-century Christian document's theology, christology, and pneumatology. This epistle is notable for its attribution of personal preexistence to Jesus and its explicit denial that he is a descendant of King David. Ep. 439: The Barnabas Group Demonstrates the Power of Collaboration
Last week, on my trip to Southern California, I learned about a model for collaboration and funding ministries that is slowing growing across the country. That model is the brainchild of The Barnabas Group. That’s a group of Christian businesspeople and philanthropists – called “partners” who pay $2100 a year to be a part of the group. Those dues pay for quarterly meetings where the partners gather to hear Christian ministries tell their story. Over the past 25 years, The Barnabas Group has helped more than a thousand Christian ministries learn the power of having a network.

Ben Smith: All for the Kingdom
Heavenly Vision, 2 Corinthians 12:1-6
Paul had seen God move in mighty ways. Often when many were coming to salvation, it also was a time when persecution and hardships were the greatest. Fourteen years earlier, while he and Barnabas were preaching in Lystra, Paul noticed a crippled man listening who had believing faith. He healed the man, and he immediately stood up and walked. When the crowds witnessed this miracle, they did not praise God but began to worship Paul and Barnabas as pagan gods. Both Paul and Barnabas pleaded with the people not to believe such lies, but scripture says that “they scarcely re...

The First Church Disagreement: What is Required for Salvation? (Acts 15:1-11) - Session 31
Because the church had both Jews and Gentiles, there was a great dispute that arose. Some Jews maintained that the Gentiles must be circumcised. As always happens with legalism, the rules keep growing and expanding. When the controversy involves what is required to be saved, it becomes a serious doctrinal question. So the church sends Paul and Barnabas to Jerusalem to decide the issue. What is required for salvation? Why would Paul circumcise Timothy? Why is circumcision so important to the Jews? From a very diverse church in Antioch, the Holy Spirit selects Barnabas and Saul for a specific job He has for them. Going from Antioch, they preach the word to Jews, a political leader, and a sorcerer who works against them. We learn Saul’s approach is direct and blunt, a technique that is sometimes needed in the face of opposition. We also see the dangers of opposing the Lord’s work.
