When does comedy become more than a laugh? Ben Mangrum of MIT joins RtB to discuss his new book, The Comedy of Computation: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Obsolescence (Stanford UP, 2025), which in some ways is organized around “the intriguing idea that human knowledge work is our definitive feature and yet the machines we are ourselves made are going to replace us at it.” Comedy has provided a toolbox (Charles Tilly calls them "collective repertoires") for responding to the looming obsolescence of knowledge workers.John's interest in Menippean satire within science fiction leads him to ask...

June 11th - Ben Hogan's Miracle at Merion 1950
The provided podcast chronicles Ben Hogan's extraordinary victory at the 1950 U.S. Open, often referred to as the "Miracle at Merion." It details the catastrophic car accident in February 1949 that left him with life-threatening injuries and the dire predictions that he would never play golf again. The source highlights Merion Golf Club's East Course as a particularly challenging venue that tested Hogan's physical endurance and precision, especially during the grueling 36-hole final day where he battled immense pain and almost collapsed. Ultimately, it describes his triumph in an 18-hole playoff against Lloyd Mangrum and George Fazio, solidifying his legacy...

"53 Days on Starvation Island" – John Bruning
Starvation Island is the name the Japanese gave the pacific Island of Guadalcanal. Second only to the Battle of Midway, the capture and retention of Guadalcanal was one of the most significant achievements leading to eventual victory in the Pacific. The price would be high, with brutal combat on the ground, at sea and in the air. A group of mostly green Marine aviators were dispatched to Guadalcanal to assist in the defense. They were lacking in supplies, equipment, fuel and ammunition. These aircrews believed the Marine Corps considered them expendable. Best Selling author John Bruning joins us to tell...

Sports' Forgotten Heroes
Only Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus won 4 U.S. Open Championships. Hogan, however, also won the 1941 Hale America National Open when the USGA cancelled the U.S. Open that year. Many think it should have counted as a Major. So, did Hogan actually win 5 U.S. Open Championships? Listen to SFH here and decide for yourself.
In 1941, the USGA cancelled the U.S. Open because of World War II. But the strange thing about the cancellation is the fact that the USGA still staged a tournament, the Hale America National Open. Now, while it was moved from Interlachen in Minnesota to the new Ridgemoor Country Club just outside of Chicago, there were very few differences between the Hale America and a U.S. Open. Ridgemoor was an easier course. The U.S. Open Championship trophy was not awarded. But consider this: there was qualifying, just like today; guys like Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Jimmy Demaret...

Lloyd Mangrum-PGA TOUR
36 times Lloyd Mangrum collected the winner's check on the PGA TOUR. He set the course record at The Masters. Won the U.S. Open in 1946 (almost won it again in 1950, but lost in the famous playoff to Ben Hogan). Twice he finished third in the PGA. Twice he finished second at The Masters. He was the TOUR's leading money winner in 1951 and won the Vardon Trophy twice (1951 and 1953). He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1998. Yet, after he retired from the game, many of the newer generation of golfers (1990s), guys who knew Hogan, Byron...
