282 | CCPT Purism: From Rogers to Axline and the Eight Principles That Shaped the Child-Centered Play Therapy Model
In this episode of the CCPT Purism series, I take you through the foundational role of Virginia Axline in translating Carl Rogers’ person-centered theory into what we now know as Child-Centered Play Therapy. Axline worked closely with Rogers and applied his concepts to children by introducing her Eight Principles of Non-Directive Play Therapy—a philosophy describing how we show up and relate to children in session, not a list of techniques or tools. I briefly walk through each of Axline’s eight principles, highlight their connections to Rogers’ core conditions, and explain how they continue to shape our mode...

June 4 marked the 34th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, in which the Chinese Communist Party put down a pro-democracy protest movement that had bubbled up in Tiananmen Square and throughout mainland China. For many, it served as a stark reminder the brutality of the country that, under the autocratic leadership of Mao Zedong killed between 40 and 80 million of its own people, could still be just as brutal.Tiananmen happened just three years before Benedict Rogers moved to China to begin teaching English. Hong Kong goes back
Six months after the handover of Hong Kong from British rule, Index on Censorship published a special edition: Hong Kong Goes Back. In it various people predicted what the future might hold. Jonathan Mirsky, then East Asia editor of The Times, wrote on how freedom of expression began to crumble in Hong Kong in anticipation of the handover. ‘Patriotic’ Twist To Hong Kong Election Laws: ‘Xi Jinping Wants Total Control’

The new changes to Hong Kong’s electoral laws suggested by Beijing is the complete dismantling of whatever remains of formal democracy, says Benedict Rogers, chief executive of Hong Kong Watch. There seems to be a desi...
