Any Day Now: The Crash (Rev 18:1-8)
Augustine wrote The City of God in response to pagan accusations that Rome came under divine judgment because the Empire turned its back on its pagan gods. The book's thesis aligns very closely with the call upon the church from Revelation 18. Babylon is fallen, but its evil influence is still very much felt. In this week’s sermon, Pastor Brian explores the difference between Babylon and the City of God and calls the church to be a distinct community while maintaining a gospel witness to those trapped in Babylon. "Sucker Punch" [Amos 1-2]
Pastor Brian introduces a new series on the Minor Prophets. This session focuses on Amos 1-2, which prepares Israel for the gospel. Amos, a shepherd from Tekoa, prophesied against eight nations around 760 BC, highlighting their sins and God's judgment. The Israelites initially approved, seeing it as divine justice against their pagan neighbors. However, Amos' final prophecy against Israel shocked them, revealing their own sins and God's impending wrath. Brian emphasizes the importance of Jesus' sacrifice in satisfying God's wrath and calls for a reminder of the gospel's urgency in today's world.

Manly P Hall - The Mystery Of The Apocalypse
Subjected to more criticism than any other book now incorporated in the New Testament, the Apocalypse -- popularly accredited to St. John the Divine -- is by far the most important but least understood of the Gnostic Christian writings. Though Justin Martyr declared the Book of Revelation to have been written by "John, one of Christ's apostles," its authorship was disputed as early as the second century after Christ. In the third century these contentions became acute and even Dionysius of Alexandria and Eusebius attacked the Johannine theory, declaring that both the Book of Revelation a...

We could hardly believe it. Here we were half-way across the world and we ran into brother priests from our same city. "What are you doing here?" We blurted out in excitement. All Hallows Eve (Halloween) and All Saints Day are further examples of Christians re-appropriating pagan holidays for Christian purposes. Like was done with Christmas and Easter -- though Halloween has proved more difficult to unmoor for its pagan past. In its Christian origin All Hallows Eve was a time to remember the departed saints. (You can see how this could lend itself to less sacred and more ghoulish themes.) The idea was to remember the departed saints because they still belong to the communion of saints. Because we believe in resurrection (and being with the Lord in the interim...
