Black Joy ft. Miss Benn
Hello beautiful people! In today's episode, I had the joy of interviewing Miss Benn, the host of the annual "Heal, Black Girl, Heal" on CKUT’s “The Montréal Sessions.” This interview is the second of the identity portion of the podcast, which focuses on how identity shapes our experiences of joy. We discuss the challenges of speaking up for yourself as an outsider, the breadth of black joy, the joy that comes with finally becoming comfortable with who you are, and more.

Composed of Clarence Tremblay (vocals, guitar), Noelle Inniss (drums), and Grace Spitzley (vocals, bass), Birds of Prrrey is an explosive trio emerging from Montreal's underground scene. After a fantastic live performance in CKUT’s music office, I caught up with the band to discuss their early musical influences, pre-show superstitions, thoughts on being labeled "Riot Grrrl" and "garage punk," and how they scope out the best shows in Montreal. Compiled in this sound reel are a handful of the most memorable Hip-Hop shows to grace the CKUT airwaves. It celebrates the talents of DJs, musicians and lyricists whose output shaped a sound peculiar to the cultural crossroads of Montreal. As the 90s brought to light the transmissive capabilities of campus and community radio, supplying the only substantial airplay for rap music in North America, CKUT’s role in Hip-Hop’s formation within Montreal is comparable to media legacies emerging from college campuses south of the border, such as Stretch and Bobbito show on 89.9 WKCR-FM (Columbia) and The Source Magazine...

CKUT remodeled our studios in June 2008. Sun Ra Arkestra were in town to perform at the Suoni Per Il Popolo festival and kindly graced us with its cosmic and earthly presence to inaugurate/baptize/christen our studios. We opened up the doors of the studio to the public (hence the chatter in the background) and also conducted a pretty wacky Sun Ra / CKUT style of official ceremony. Khalid M'Seffar, host of Funky Revolutions is conducting the interview and he is speaking to Marshal Allen, Michael Ray and Ray Scott.
