לפני שנים רבות הגיע אלי גלעד (כל הפרטים שונו ונשמר חסיון מלא ) שהייה חייל בצבא. הוא גרה בדרום הארץ להורים שהיו מלאי חרדה, שמא הבן שלהם יהיה שמן כמותם. מגיל צעיר הם ממש הכריחו אותו להצטרף לקבוצת ריצה תחרותית ועד גיל 18 הוא התאמן 4 פעמים בשבוע, כשבנוסף פעמיים בשבוע חדר כושר. החרדה שלהם השתלטה עליו והוא חווה הרבה צעקות, איומים, ובעיקר סוג של התעמרות. "איזה שמן אתה", "תראה איך אתה נראה", "אתה אוכל כמו בהמה". בתקופת בית הספר והספורט האינטנסיבי המשקל היה סביר אבל עם הגיוס לצבא והפסקת האימונים הקשוחים הוא השמין קרוב ל 30 ק"ג. מרגע זה חייו בבית הפכו גיהינום. ההערות, המילים הבוטות, ההשפלה והחוויה שלמרות גודלו הוא בלתי נראית. ועם החוויה הזו הוא הגיעה אלי לטיפול. זה רק אחד הסיפורים השמנופובים, שהגיעו אלי לקליניקה ועיקרם היה ארועים של אלימות מילולית מתמשכת שראשיתם לפעמים כבר בגיל רך בשנים. אירועים שהפכו עם השנים לסוג של טראומה שעיצבה את החיים הבוגרים של אותם אנשים. זה כוחה ההרסני של השמנופוביה אותה פוגשים אנשים בכל רבדי החיים. בבית, במערכת החינוך, בחנויות הבגדים בתקשורת ובמערכת הרפואה.
