VICTORY: Fighting Ag-Gag in Ontario with Camille Labchuk
Investigations into farms by animal advocacy groups is an essential tool to exposing serious, systemic abuses of animals, failures to follow basic policy, and have led to criminal charges. Bill 156 Is Bad For Animals
Bill 156 is dangerous for animals. This legislation, introduced in late 2019, targets those who find their ways onto animal agricultural facilities and document disregard for animal welfare or individuals who are working on farms and become whistleblowers in the face of blatant animal cruelty. It even targets those who protest or bear witness for animals on their way to slaughter. It is billed as a way to protect the security of farmers and food production, but if that was the intent it would focus on the farms – not those who find problems with them. Animal agriculture is...

Is it Time to End Live Transport?
In Episode 8 of Paw & Order, hosts Peter Sankoff and Camille Labchuk revisit the Australia live export scandal. After a whistleblower exposed immense suffering and abuse endured by sheep shipped to the Middle East, change may finally be coming to a brutal industry. But what about Canada? Live export happens here at home, too, and it's bad news for animals. Thousands of horses are shipped by air every year to Japan, where they are slaughtered for meat.

Who Gets the Dog? The Battle for Pet Custody
Hosts Peter Sankoff and Camille Labchuk give you all the details on a groundbreaking new pet custody case from the Newfoundland & Labrador Court of Appeal. In Baker v Harmina, a young former couple fought over who would get custody of Mya, a Bernese mountain dog-poodle mix. Mr. Baker was awarded full custody, based on the conception that the only thing that matters is who bought Mya. But a dissenting judge disagreed, and would have given the two joint custody, stating that "ownership of a dog is more complicated to decide than, say, a car, or a piece of furniture."

What does Canadian Federalism Mean for Animal Law?
Peter Sankoff and Camille Labchuk dive into an important topic in animal law: Federalism. In other words, how does the division of powers between federal and provincial governments affect animals? Unlike many other countries, Canada has no national animal welfare legislation. Here's your chance to understand why that is, and why it's such a serious problem.

A Legal Fight For Freedom
A visit to the aquarium or zoo could be magical as a child. Heck, for a lot of adults, it can still be magical. Seeing species from all over the world up close is remarkable. Of course, once we realize that they’re confined in unnatural circumstances, displaying neurotic and self-damaging behaviours, and that their incarceration rarely, if ever, plays a role in true conservation of their species in the wild, the magic fades. Though many documentaries, non-profits, and passionate advocates are showing that zoos and aquariums are not what we once believed them to be, they st...

Animal Law Podcast #14: Supreme Court Holds Bestiality isn’t Really All That Illegal in Canada

I am joined by two superb Canadian animal law attorneys, Camille Labchuk, the executive director of Animal Justice, and Peter Sankoff, a law professor with the University of Alberta Faculty of Law. They will discuss the Court’s decision in R. v D.L.W., a case in which they were actively involved as intervenors, and they will also explain why that decision, though, on the surface, disappointing, actually demonstra...

Episode 324: Alberta's Animal Awakening
When the words ‘animal sentience’ and ‘Alberta’ popped up in The Fur-Bearers’ news feeds, we had an office full of cartoonish double-takes. It was revealed last week that the NDP government in the bluest province of the nation is looking to improve their animal welfare standards – and among the changes, there’s indications that they may incorporate laws that recognize non-human animals as sentient beings. This is a move that Quebec made last year, and other governments around the world have considered or implemented. But Alberta is also the largest livestock producer, and is home to one of the largest...

Episode 302: The political wilderness
We have a new Prime Minister, new Members of Parliament, and a new cabinet. What does it all mean for the animals? It’s hard to make a clear distinction. On one hand, we have a PMO that already seems more open and transparent than it has for the past 10 years; on the other, we have a Prime Minister who’s a little too fond of his Canada Goose coyote fur-trimmed parka. We have gender equality in the cabinet for the first time, and cabinet members who wore seal skin to their swearing-in ceremonies. To help...
