एक बार तुर्किस्तान के बादशाह को अकबर की बुद्धि की परीक्षा के लेने का विचार हुआ। उसने एक दूत को पत्र देकर सिपाहियों के साथ दिल्ली भेजा। पत्र का मजमून कुछ इस प्रकार था- 'अकबरशाह! मुझे सुनने में आया है कि आपके भारततवर्ष में कोई ऐसा पेड़ पैदा होता है जिसके पत्ते खाने से मनुष्य की आयु बढ़ जाती है। यदि यह बात सच्ची है तो मेरे लिए उस पेड़ के थोड़े पत्ते अवश्य भिजवाएं.'
बादशाह उस पत्र को पढ़कर विचारमग्न हो गए। फिर कुछ देर तक बीरबल से राय-मशवरा कर उन्होंने सिपाहियों सहित उस दूत को कैद कर एक सुदृढ़ किले में बंद करवा दिया। इस प्रकार कैद हुए उनको कई दिन बीत गए तो बादशाह अकबर बीरबल को लेकर उन कैदियों को देखने गए।
बादशाह को देखकर उनको अपने मुक्त होने की आशा हुई, परन्तु यह बात निर्मूल थी।
बादशाह उनके पास पहुंचकर बोले - 'तुम्हारा बादशाह जिस वस्तु को चाहता है, वह मैं तब तक उसे नहीं दे सकूंगा जब तक कि इस सुदृढ़ किले की एक-दो ईट न ढह जाए, उसी वक्त तुम लोग आजाद किए जाओगे। खाने-पीने की तुम्हें कोई तकलीफ नहीं होगी। मैंने उसका यथाचित प्रबन्ध करा दिया है।'
इतना कहकर बादशाह चले गए, परन्तु कैदियों की चिंता और बढ़ गई। वे अपने मुक्त होने के उपाय सोचने लगे। उनको अपने स्व्देश के सुखों का स्मरण कर बड़ा दुख होता था।
वे कुछ देर तक इसी चिंता में डूबे रहे। अंत में वे इश्वर की वन्दना करने लगे- 'हे भगवान! क्या हम इस बन्धन से मुक्त नहीं किए जाएंगे? क्या हमारा जन्म इस किले में बन्द रहकर कष्ट भोगने के लिए हुआ है? आप तो दीनानाथ हैं, अपना नाम याद कर हम असहायों की भी सुध लीजिए।‘ इस प्रकार वे नित्य प्राथर्ना करने लगे।
अंत में उनकी प्रार्थना का असर हुआ ईश्वर की कृपा हुई। एक दिन बड़े जोरों का भूकम्प आया और किले का कुछ भाग भूकम्प के कारण धराशायी हो गया। सामने का पर्वत भी टूटकर चकनाचूर हो गया। इस घटना के पश्चात दूत ने बादशाह के पास किला टूटने की सूचना भेजी।
बादशाह को अपनी कही हुई बात याद आ गई। इसलिए उन्होंने दूत को उसके साथियों सहित दरबार में बुलाकर बोले - 'आपको अपने बादशाह का आशय बिदित होगा और अब उसका उत्तर भी तुमने समझ लिया है। यदि न समझा हो तो सुनो, मैं उसे और भी स्पष्ट किए देता हूं।' देखो, तुम लोग गणना में केवल सौ हो और तुम्हारी आह से ऐसा सुदृढ़ किला ढह गया, फिर जहां हजारों मनुष्यों पर अत्याचार हो रहा हो, वहां के बादशाह की आयु कैसे बढ़ेगी? उसकी तो आयु घटती ही चली जाएगी और लोगों की आह से उसका शीघ्र ही पतन हो जाएगा। हमारे राज्य में अत्याचार नहीं होता, गरीब प्रजा पर अत्याचार न करना और भलीभांति पोष्ण करना ही आयुवर्धक वृक्ष है। बाकी सारी बातें मिथ्या हैं।‘
इस प्रकार समझा-बुझाकर बादशाह ने उस एलची को उसके साथियों सहित स्वदेश लौट जाने की आज्ञा दी और उनका राह-खर्च भी दिया। उन्होंने तुर्किस्तान में पहुंचकर यहां की सारी बातें अपने बादशाह को समझाईं। अकबर की शिक्षा लेकर बादशाह दरबारियों सहित उनकी भूरि-भुरि प्रशंसा करने लगा।
