Downtown Planning, Administrative Approval, Road Widenting & More
Urban Planner Andrew Georgiadis joins me for a chat about his work on the City's downtown master plan and the latest update effort that is just beginning. We also discuss Sarasota County's $38 million plan to widen Honore Avenue from 2 lanes to 4 lanes, and the recent denial of the administratively approved Obsidian pencil tower. How can resident concerns be proactively addressed? Is Administrative Approval a good idea? If so, how can it be improved so crazy pencil towers don't happen? Does road widening reduce traffic? Join us for a discussion about our built environment - what work and what doesn't.

Treehouse for Oligarchs? Obsidian is Over, for now
Community leader Ron Shapiro joins me to discuss the two years plus effort to defeat a proposed pencil tower in downtown Sarasota. Called a "treehouse for oligarchs" the proposed tower, called Obsidian, would have loomed more than 100 feet taller than other Sarasota highrises. The Obsidian proposal included seven feet of "interstitial space" between its 18 floors, and only 14 proposed residences. Obsidian's excessive height was a clear play to ensure water views by towering over adjacent waterfront buildings. Cramming 337 ft of building on a 1/4 acre lot, the building would have created logistical parking and trash removal problems, and safety issues. The propo...

Overdevelopment in Rural Sarasota: The Fight to Keep the Country Country
Old Miakka residents Mike Hutchinson and Eileen Fitzgerald are suing Sarasota County over the approval of sprawl development on rural lands in northeast Sarasota County. The Sarasota County Comprehensive plan requires the County to provide for rural lifestyles, but how is that actually enforced? We discuss their case, the impacts of overdevelopment, and how Sarasota County government looks to be serving developers at the expense of residents and their quality of life.In 2022 the County approved the expansion of Lakewood Ranch (aka "Lakewood Ranch Southeast") - 5,000 homes on 4,100 acres that is now rural land. If built, those hom...

Uneven Playing Field - a discussion about contradictions regarding Siesta Key and the local GOP with Lourdes Ramirez
Lourdes Ramirez won her lawsuit challenging a hotel approval which clearly violated Sarasota County's comprehensive plan. Why would another legal decision, with the same judge, find that a similarly illegal hotel approval can proceed? Sarasota Republic precinct captains are the traditional members of the Sarasota County Republican Executive committee, but that changed this year. Many of these volunteer leaders typically chosen or elected by their Republican neighbors have now found themselves ousted. What's going on? Lourdes Ramirez joins me to discuss the details.
