Audacious with Chion Wolf
Audacious at sea: Wisdom from strangers on a cruise ship
A wise woman once said, “You can tell the ocean anything, but it has to be the truth.“ Chion Wolf boards the MSC Meraviglia expecting a week of small talk and sunscreen. But the farther she gets from land, the more people become willing to hang out in the deep end to talk about love, loss, faith, sobriety and stories they’ve been holding onto for years. When they speak, the ocean listens. And in this hour, so do you. Listen to a BONUS track featuring more voices from the ship: Latisha from the Bro...

BONUS: More stories from the cruise ship
Ahoy! Here’s a little bonus treasure from our episode, Audacious at Sea: Wisdom from Strangers on a Cruise Ship. Chion spends a blissful vacation week aboard the MSC Meraviglia with about 5,000 fellow humans, sailing from Brooklyn to the Bahamas and back. And because we couldn’t fit everyone she talks with into the on-air version, this bonus gives you even more of their voices and stories. Somewhere in between sunrise coffees and late-night pizza buffets, Chion asks passengers - and a few locals in Nassau, Bahamas - to share their favorite piece of life advic...

Some people answer questions for a living.Chion Wolf has made a life out of asking them.In this episode of Inner Voice, Jeffrey sits down with Chion Wolf, host of Audacious and beloved voice of Connecticut Public Radio, for a heartfelt conversation about the power of asking. From the early days of seeking her mother’s approval to crafting radically vulnerable interviews on-air, Chion shares how curiosity has shaped her path—and why questioning isn’t just a skill, but a way of life. Audacious Live! Show & Tell birthday bash in Hartford
It was part birthday party, part storytelling spectacle, and 100% Audacious! We threw a live Show & Tell at Dead Language Beer Project in Hartford, and invited public radio fans to bring an object they love, and the story that makes it matter. From a PEZ dispenser with family ties, to a holy (literally) beer mug, to walnut shell art that has mesmerized a family for generations, the night was full of big laughs, tiny treasures, and extraordinary moments. From The Bad Ideas Dept.: Today’s show is not about tapirs
This week, we’re celebrating the show’s 15th anniversary (which was last year, but never mind about that part). Over those 15+ years, we’ve done something north of 3,000 shows. And every one of those shows was intended, more or less, to be about some … thing. Towels or Trump or toast or television or whatever. This hour we do the opposite thing: a show not about a specific something — tapirs. Note: This show features Chion Wolf’s performance of “Let’s Not Talk About Tapirs,” with lyrics by Colin McEnroe and music by Chion Wolf.

From the late 70s onwards Chion has been one of the leading voices at the intersection of film scholarship and cinephilic criticism. Books such as The Voice in Cinema (1982), Audio/Vision (1993), Music in Cinema (1995) & Film, A Sound Art in many ways defined the sub-field of film sound criticism. Acquitted! Or: Dorothy, We're Not In Phillydelphia Anymore
We had trouble mustering enthusiasm to wrap up our final episode of this second season of Pardon Me. Last week's roller coaster of a trial culminated in 43 senators choosing to acquit on a weak and deceptive defense -- despite a factual and painstaking accounting of how bad the breach was, how bad it might have been, and how Donald Trump incited it. We talk to a former CIA analyst about how bad it could have been and a TV critic on the power of the visual. We also bring you factoids with Chion Wolf and Colin's closing essay...

Pardon Me – Another Damn Impeachment Show
There Is No January Exception.
Donald Trump's legal team delivered their defense of the former president Friday. They followed a tightly argued and visceral presentation delivered by House managers that, some say, has made it easy for Republican senators to convict Trump. They likely won't. We wondered if our show, recorded in part on Thursday, would omit important events that occurred thereafter. Given that many Republican senators have already decided to acquit, why would the defense feel the need to address the 144 constitutional lawyers who debunked their First Amendment argument, the 150 constitutional lawyers who say the impeachment of Trump is constitutional, or the peopl...

We took a chance that House Democrats were going to send the Article of Impeachment to the Senate this week. We were wrong. Instead, the House will transmit its Article of Impeachment charging former President Trump with "incitement of insurrection" to the Senate on Monday. Why should the House wait any longer when more than a dozen Republican senators are trying to dismiss the impeachment trial before it begins, based on the disputed claim that it's unconstitutional to try an ex-president. And House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is already walking back his prior claim that Trump incited the riot...

For this event, Michel Chion presented a lecture performance tracing a history of the ‘acousmêtre’ – Chion’s term for the mysterious off-screen voice in cinema, through his own oeuvre and the works of Bresson, Lang, Syberberg, Spike Jonze and more. https://liquidarchitecture.org.au/events/michel-chion Histories and Theories of Sound 25 August, 2017 Australian Cinémathéque, QAGOMA Presented by Liquid Architecture, Australian Cinémathèque, QAGOMA and INSTITUT FRANÇAIS Audio: Mara Schwerdtfeger Financial support from patrons at any level has a...

If you live in Connecticut, chances are pretty high that you know Chion Wolf’s voice. In addition to being the sound engineer and daytime announcer for Connecticut Public Radio, she hosts two podcasts of her own- a storytelling show called The Mouth Off, and an advice show called What’s Your Problem, both recorded live in Hartford, CT. She has a million other projects that I could mention, but it would probably take up the entirety of the podcast to describe all of them. By far my favorite thing she does, though, is a...

The Cinematic Voice
The voice in cinema is a phenomenon that is in many ways taken for granted. Since the advent of the talkies, the speaking voice synchronised to the human body on-screen is the ingrained process for narrative exposition and character development. However, this accepted synchronisation is one of sound cinema’s fundamental illusions. This major production for The Cinematologists features the analysis from leading film scholars and critics, each focusing on uses and interpretations of cinematic voice, using a plethora of filmic examples. Many aspects of the cinematic voice are explored including star voices, script and performance, so...

Acquitted! Or: Heading Down A Very, Very Dark Corridor
Note: This episode contains strong language. The Senate acquitted President Trump on both articles of the impeachment. Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, was the only Republican who voted to convict the president on one charge, for "egregious" behavior he believed rose to the level of a "high crime and misdemeanor." President Trump responded with anger. He fumed at his perceived enemies at Thursday's National Prayer Breakfast. They include members of Congress, people on his staff, FBI agents, and even the state of New York. Senate Republicans hoping for a more subdued Trump were wrong. Others knew better. O...

The Senate has voted, 51 to 49, not to subpoena witnesses or documents in its impeachment trial of President Trump. Closing arguments are expected on Monday, and a verdict could come next Wednesday afternoon. This week, Colin and The Gist's Mike Pesca puzzle over the Republican strategy and Alan Dershowitz. He's the Trump attorney who argued that the president could engage in a quid pro quo that benefited him personally as long as he believes his reelection is in the public interest. Dershowitz believes the media misunderstood his argument. These are his words. And New York Times TV crit...

The World's Greatest Deliberative Body Or A Bunch Of Bored White Guys Playing With Fidget Spinners?
Chief Justice John Roberts scolded House managers and the President's counsel early Wednesday for using language beneath the dignity of the world's "greatest deliberative body." This, after Senator Susan Collins complained about "unsettling comments" she felt went against Senate rules of decorum. Speaking of decorum, senators played with fidget spinners and did crossword puzzles while House managers made their case for impeachment. Enough of this pettifoggery! This week, Slate's Dahlia Lithwick says we're in a scary race to the bottom in our political conduct; law professor Lara Bazelon implores House managers to appeal directly to v...
