Vancouver Rundown
Vancouver Rundown Monday April 7, 2025
Two social advocates, running for left-of-centre civic parties, have been elected to Vancouver City Council in a byelection with near record turnout. COPE’s Sean Orr and Lucy Maloney with OneCity defeated all other candidates by at least a two-to-one margin. Former councillor Colleen Hardwick, the only candidate with elected experience, came in third. The two candidates running for Mayor Ken Sim’s ABC were far behind. A number of Vancouverites have expressed outrage over the hours-long voting lines as the City decided to cheap-out on polling stations and election day staff.

A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats w/ Colleen Hardwick
As we continue to map the city of Vancouver, the neighbourhood of False Creek South comes into view. Heralded for its progressive approach to urban design, False Creek South demonstrates the core principles of the city livable movement. In the early 1970’s The Electors Action Movement (TEAM) championed a turn towards human-scale urbanism that prioritized aesthetics and livability. But fifty years later Vancouver has transitioned from being a beacon of livability to a city that commentators have recently referred to as “impossibly unaffordable”. In the midst of Vancouver’s embrace of bad urbanism, the False Creek South neighbourhood has come und...

Price and Ladner place bets on Election '22
With 10 days counting down to Election Day, Gordon Price pulls in ex-NPA-Council-crony-turned-urban-food-security-activist-and-all-around-mensch Peter Ladner for a frank talk on what is up with this wacky election. With 58 candidates for Vancouver City Council and 10 registered parties in the running, how can we make sense of it all?Among the many chewy topics on the table, Gord and Peter consider: can anyone entice the centre Left to ride to a City Hall majority—and do these labels still have any meaning? Are the developers still putting up the campaign bucks and calling the shots? Are the old wh...

A homelessness emergency
At the behest of Jean Swanson and Pete Fry, Vancouver declares a homelessness emergency in what was described as a watered down motion that lacks clear targets. Nevertheless the motion maintained a call for vacancy control, so we break down what that is and why some oppose the measure.Vancouver Rape Relief, long criticized for its refusal to serve trans woman, has permanently lost funding from the City of Vancouver. Smart Citizens: How To Make Government More Accountable
The buzz: “The real secret of success in Government 2.0 is thinking about government as a platform” (Dr. Mark Drapeau). “Government of the people, by the people, for the people” resonates around the world, yet polls reveal deep distrust of governing institutions that forget the people. Enter E-Government and Open Government. When combined, they pave the way for Government 2.0, a next generation collaborative technology using social media, cloud computing, new technologies and AI-based apps to increase citizen participation. Path to Startup Success: Sell-Design-Build vs. Design-Build-Sell
The buzz: “I would love to momentarily pause time while people line up on my doorstep waiting to pay me hard cash for a product that doesn’t even exist. It’s worth a shot, right?” [Naresh Jain, infoq.com). You’re a startup with fantastic ideas you KNOW will take your industry by storm. Wow! Will you sell the vision before spending to design and build – or design and build before you sell and risk market rejection – or switch between the two? Be strong and remember Thomas Edison’s words: “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” The e...

Beyond Tax Incentives: Governments and Startup Ecosystems
The buzz: “A company shouldn’t get addicted to being shiny, because shiny doesn’t last” [Jeff Bezos]. New U.S. businesses make up nearly all net-new job creation and 20% of gross job creation, with loud hype about emerging startup ecosystems and government support. Reality check: governments pour millions into “hip” facilities and government venture funds invest in “best local”, regardless of product-market fit. Stop! Successful startups are built through careful iteration and a laser-like focus on customers, not big-splash. The experts speak. Colleen Hardwick, PlaceSpeak: “If I’d asked people what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse” (H. Ford). Da...
