Rejuvenation: The Temple Mount Faithful
Eve Harow speaks with longtime Temple Mount activist Yisrael Medad on the different aspects of Chanuka. The Hashmonaim/ Maccabbees rededicated the Temple after the war with the Seleucid Greeks; today we can rededicate ourselves to the values and freedoms for which they fought. For example: The ability to pray on the Temple Mount, the necessity of not allowing Israel in particular and the West at large to be intimidated by Muslims and others who would deny us those basic rights, and more. Chanuka in the land is felt in its natural form. Olive oil it is. To life and light.

November 22, 2025 | #2547 - Temple Structure & the Gospel, Part 3 of 3
In Leviticus, God’s Law provided for unholy human beings—the children of Israel—to live in the midst of their holy God. When we get to the book of Ephesians, something amazing happens. Through Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection, the division via purification laws that prevented Gentiles from worshiping God at the Temple was erased. Now, Jewish people and Gentiles who believe in Jesus are bound together by the indwelling Holy Spirit! We hope our study has made the goodness of the gospel revealed through the Temple all the more vivid and powerful in your life!

Beyond a Time for Rebuke
On the High Holy Days, we’re told to look back over the past year so that we can avoid repeating our mistakes. Whereas Moses, in his final speech to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land, chooses to look back over their journey together and rebuke the people to ensure they don’t make the same mistakes twice, this past year has been too difficult to begin with rebuking. Instead, here is a reminder of some of the most difficult moments of this past year, and the way that our community shone so brightly. As the first...

A midrash presents the idea that the reason Abraham was chosen to be the first Jew could be compared to a person who sees a birah doleket with God inside. Birah doleket can mean either a palace on fire, or a palace all lit up; regardless, God is inside and Abraham does not choose to walk by. It’s a matter of perspective, and so too is the way that each of us sees our country after the election. Regardless, we have to be like Abraham and not pass by. After the election, there was such a complete mix of e...

Israel's 75th Anniversary Sermon: Two Questions That Heal with Rabbi Wes Gardenswartz
For some reason--I don’t know why it happens, I just know that it happens--tensions seem to rise in a family before a big milestone or family simcha. People tend to argue. To bicker. To get into negative energy patterns. The classic example of weird negative energy preceding what should be a happy family time is a wedding. If you have ever planned a wedding, you know this. As the day draws near, anxiety rises. Lists proliferate. Who is going to go to Costco to get the bottled water and the small bags of Cape Cod potato chips? Who is...

When I was in Jerusalem last week sitting shiva for our father, after folks gave their condolences and shared their memories, they would ask me for my take on Israel. The conversation was sobering, making me feel naïve and disconnected from the real Israel that is. Me: In Greater Jewish Boston, we are so excited to be marking Israel at 75. A big contingent from our shul is going to celebrate Israel at 75! A big contingent from the whole Boston Jewish community is going to mark this joyful and incredible milestone! Talmud Class: What is Your Voice on Israel Now?
How do we think and talk about Israel now as its new government (In Israel, a Hard-Right Agenda Gains Steam. Patrick Kingsley, NY Times, 1/11/23) takes power? Here are five options. Do not think and talk about Israel. It is too upsetting. It is too much. We have our hands full. There are synagogues and rabbis who do not talk about Israel because it is too divisive. Protest and/or boycott members of the governing coalition whose words and policies are anti-democratic and anti-pluralistic. More than 330 American rabbis signed a letter doing just that.

Talmud Class: What Does Stephen Sondheim Mentoring a Young Singer Teach Us about Our Relationship With Israel?
For my money, the best, simplest, shortest expression of the complexity of Israel remains the opening chapter of Ari Shavit’s classic My Promised Land. Shavit’s grandfather was among the first Zionists who settled Eretz Yisrael. Shavit himself served in the Israeli army as a paratrooper. The book opens: “For as long as I can remember, I remember fear. Existential fear.” Two pages later: “For as long as I can remember, I remember occupation. Only a week after I asked my father whether the Arab nations were going to conquer Israel, Israel conquered the Arab-populated regions of the West Bank a...

What is a Jew - with Rabbi Michelle Missaghieh, her 26th year at Temple Israel of Hollywood
This is the final episode of a three-part series asking three distinguished Rabbis of Los Angeles, California, to answer the same question - What is a Jew? According to Rabbi Missaghieh, showing three very different opinions on the same subject, each with valid points, is the essence of answering the question of what it means to be a Jew. The question is more important than the answer. The Jew, in this Rabbi’s answer, is someone living with ambiguity. The search itself for answers is the cornerstone of the identity. Rabbi Missaghieh is an innovative clergy person, enriching her congregation at...

The Collonades to Herod's Temple
Josephus was given the job of recording history by the Romans because he was so accurate and detailed. Yet the Jews, and most Christians, choose to ignore his information about Herod's Temple. Josephus records that two arms or collonades extended from the Roman Antonia Fortress to the Temple. The model of Jerusalem and the Temple totally ignores this important feature and misleads people about the layout of Jerusalem and the Temple prior to the Roman destruction in 70 A.D.
