Nice Work
Artist Carrie Hott slows down the internet
Carrie Hott likes to tinker. She takes apart electronics and tries to figure out how they work. She once did a residency at the UC Davis Center for Spaceflight Research. A recent project involves a pocket-sized, solar-powered internet server that hosts a website that she coded herself. Researching Carrie Hott’s work got me wondering, what is it that artists do? How is their inquiry different from—or the same as—scientific or technological inquiry? We touch on those questions and more in our conversation. Carrie Hott is an artist, designer and educator. She is Assistan...

Something for everyone. Overkill? Maybe. Eclectic? Absolutely. This mix, my first of 2026, captures elements of my set from Early Doors Club at the end of December, wh...

History in 28-minutes
Lost Reminders: Florida Agriculture Before Suburbia
Today, where quiet streets line a suburban Florida neighborhood, a small, bustling town of sorts once stood. When the Everglades were drained in the early 1900s, it created dry land that eventually became host to several Florida cities that were formed in the mid-twentieth century. For many of those new municipalities, agriculture was an interim stage in the history of the area before incorporation took place. One such city, Coral Springs, was the site of a vast farming and ranching enterprise which included a now-forgotten settlement that existed decades before the city was established.Karl Miller explains.

Coral Reefs in Crisis! A Discussion with Rebecca Vega-Thurber
The magnificent coral reefs of the world are dying! These fantastic underwater living structures that support entire ecosystems are undergoing massive die-offs that have decimated coral reefs all over the globe. Tropical coral reefs rely on a symbiosis between the coral polyp and a photosynthetic algae, and when this symbiosis is disrupted, the coral reef undergoes “bleaching” and ultimately dies. Dr. Rebecca Vega-Thurber is an Associate Professor at Oregon State University who has devoted her research career to studying coral reefs. Dr. Vega-Thurber talks about how climate change is driving the death of coral reefs, how...
