瓶中稿(華、粵)祖恩安的告別告白 Jerome’s farewell ballad與Jerome認識是一次珍貴的緣機。也是一個玄機。一個在台灣生活了近四十年的美國人。參與了台灣的基建和文化教育，最後成為一個捍衛台灣民主的老人。與Jerome相處的一段日子，我們還談到很多文學的瑣事。要離開了，三十多年的社區、社會，諸多的人和事。回到美國是否就告別了這段歷史。不見得。那天我和艾琳達一起探訪Jerome，叫他從頭說起，他就由美好的美國五十年代說起，經歷激情的六十年代，他為了孩子的教育，由文學轉到MBA，到私營公司謀生。輾轉來到台灣，最終在尋找一個地方的身份時，發現自己已經垂垂老矣。『再不回去看看孫子們，他們進入大學，就再沒有相通的可能了。』這是一個告別的告白。我用廣東話寫出了Jerome的話，卻保留了他原來的聲音。回應他倡議的『索尋自身身份的範例』。可能僅此而已。

今日係二月一號，中國新年...我地喺台灣唔會叫中國新年，會叫農曆新年...Lenny同我，艾琳達嚟同Jerome Keating傾偈。佢差唔多喺台灣生活咗四十年，決定要離開。其實只係三十六年...我地覺得係一個好機會，做一個佢嘅生命歷程紀錄。我係一個生命故事嘅搜集者。
我嘅背景好複雜，就算只講我嚟到台灣之後。要全部咁講不如你去我嘅網站，就有我嘅生平履歷，我寫過嘅書...我正準備遷出呢個屋企。我有兩本護照，一本係台灣護照，一本係美國護照。我俾你睇下一個有趣嘅嘢，就係我嘅身份證。你睇我媽媽嘅名字係乜野？你媽媽嘅名，你玩嘢。你可以解釋一下嗎？我去辦我嘅身份證，佢十幾年前就已經過世，佢地問我用乜嘢中文名，我點媽媽從來無起過中文名，當時我同一個朋友一齊，佢話：不如就用愛台灣啦！於是我身份證上面嘅媽媽名字就係愛台灣。
好多人認識Jerome，唔單只係佢搞嘅早餐會，而係佢喺i英文台灣時報上面寫嘅評論文章。Jerome我地可以由你出生講起嗎？我嗎1938年出生，戰爭剛開始喺歐洲展開，我嘅早年記憶就係睇好多果時戰事嘅地圖。但我係芝加哥長大，喺戰時時算係安全嘅地方。我係諾頓咸大學畢業，亦喺果度讀完碩士。對我嘅早年嚟講，最有影響嘅係六十年代。果時美國剛由二次大戰出嚟，未有好大嘅破壞，而歐洲同亞洲都係則滿目蒼夷，美國木土未有乜嘢戰事，雖然有一定人口死於戰爭。五十年代喺美國長大係美好嘅。佢地建造州際超級公路，經濟起飛，作家如Keroacu寫咗本好盛名嘅《在路上》。佢成為好多人嘅偶像。好多人開始遊歷。州際公路，汽車令呢種生活可行。五十年代係精彩嘅時光。然後六十年代係更激蕩嘅歲月。你可以講一下你嘅知識根源嗎？點樣入大學，入研究院。你講過你係讀文學嘅。
係。我因為一直都好鐘意睇書。我發現文學能令你知道生命。文學嘅故事俾你好多處境。好多人物。又有果D沖突。可以係喺人物之間，喺個人世界裡面，可以係人同政府之間，亦可以喺一個外在嘅處境，好似戰爭。又可以同自然有關。所以，我地可以見到人對矛沖突矛盾嘅反應。同佢地嘅抉擇。我總對文學充滿迷惑。你又可以由作者果度，攞到透過人物表現出嚟嘅觀點。又或者我地所謂一種超常存在嘅述事者。好似神一樣。所以文學有好多方面都叫人很著迷。
你有想過自己會成為一個作家嗎？
唔係一開始就想嘅。其實當我回顧我嘅教育，我有過一D我想做嘅嘢。我想攞到博士學位。我不知道你地記唔記得Erich Segal，佢寫過一個小說叫《愛情故事》，被拍成電影。佢有D似我嘅目標，呢個人有一個博士學位，喺哈佛大學教書，寫一本小說，俾拍成一部流行電影。
可以稱得係通俗，因為係好單調嘅故仔。
但喺六十年代，佢係一部in-movie。
於是你有一個喺著名大學教書，寫了本小說被拍成電影，你仲想點？有所成就。而且佢仲跑咗波士頓馬拉松。佢係當時嘅最佳男人。所以佢成為我嘅一個非偶像式嘅目標。我拿到我嘅博士學位，我也跑咗馬拉松，雖然唔係波士頓，好多跑手跑目標。亦寫咗好一堆書，雖然無電影。呢個就係世界自有其道。有位作家寫咗呢個書，如果有人走出嚟，就會有世界嘅路。
好似依家我地睇到Trump搞出嚟嘅混亂。仍然有人會繼續俾佢迷惑。呢個就係世界嘅路。
特別係佢一直講自己係普通人嘅救世主。然後好多有錢人就跑出嚟。我相信佢地嘅身家數以trillion計。
喺文學入面有好多好似佢咁樣嘅人物。文學揭示咁樣嘅事物。但當我唸博士嘅時候，我無選文學，而選咗人文科學，因為佢係多面向互聯嘅學問。果時比較少大學有呢個選擇。如果你選擇文學，你要寫論文時，必須找到人家未寫過嘅人或題目。所有嘅好作家都已經俾人挑選晒。我唔想俾限制。Interdisplinary 人文科學俾我更多嘅彈性同自由。所以我嘅博士論文題目係個人身份嘅概念。後來成為我果本關於生命範例嘅書。

喺我嘅論文，我用咗個人身份概念，同三位美國著名嘅
第一位係Edwards,一位十八世紀嘅清教徒，佢有一套確立嘅對世界範例嘅觀念；第二位係十九世紀嘅Emerson，佢係一位超玄學者，反對清教徒嘅觀念，但其實你入到佢地嘅範例世界，佢地有好多相似嘅地方。前者嘅神聖，同後者嘅超常。第三位係Whitehead，佢嘅哲學又同前兩者完全唔同。佢地就係我嘅論文入面嘅人物。係從佢地個別嘅生命範例中，去睇個人身份嘅概念。我將十八、十九、二十世紀的美國概念，各自都係非常具影響力嘅。觀察佢地嘅沖突同類似。最後帶出我關於生命範例嘅寫作。

果時係六十年代。我地有越戰，Kennedy俾暗殺，馬丁博士被殺，果個係一個混亂嘅時代。把生命範例放到果個時代嘅美國，就見到舊嘅觀念係美國南部仍然堅找唔放，而新觀念，新思潮一邊入嚟，我發現六十年代就係一個美國尋找自身身份嘅時代。我係七一、七二年完成我嘅論文。
當我睇番轉頭，我個人嘅生活，我得到好多唔同嘅嘢。雖然我好鐘意文學，我嘅個人感召告訴我，我應該成為一個心理學家。但係當時我無模範人物。我認識好多唔同學科嘅朋友走入文學同唔同嘅領域。存在主義喺六十年代嘅美國非常盛行。我對佢地嘅概念、理想同願景都好著迷。

我參加過一D反戰嘅示威行動。我記得當Kent State事件發生時，係一個好關鍵性嘅時刻。我當時在搞我嘅博士論文，事件發生，當然係悲劇性，但另一方面，亦有佢其它嘅呈現。當時我係大學嘅教學助理，我有一大堆學期尾要處理評分嘅論文，Kent State校園學生被射殺事件之後，校園已經被封了。他們說，就給所有人他們現有嘅評級就算了。聽起嚟好似有D離譜，當時我面對這一大堆要被評分嘅論文，而他們基本上講你可以將佢地拋掉。都自由啦！事件係一場悲劇。但如果你將佢同美國嘅國會動亂比較，人們嘅反應，你就可以見到喺Trump嘅帶領下，美國嚟到一個幾咁悲劇性嘅時代。我亦活過尼克遜同水門事件…

後嚟我嚟到Dallas地區在大學教書，果陣我有三個細路仔，我唸到如果我到時要供佢地讀大學，美國大學嘅費用好高，越嚟越高，到我嘅孫，三個嘅學費加堆一齊先夠一個入學。我決定我要轉行。到私營機構，喺訓練、人力發展行業工作。我仍然係用教書嘅傳播技巧。如今喺商業機構，人工好好多。所以我喺Dallas嘅大學攞咗個MBA嘅學位。然後搵到份我認為好理想嘅工作。係奧的斯工程公司，佢地專做油田嘅工程同有關嘅機械。點樣從土地尋掘油礦。當時我唸，我喺Texas,喺石油行業打工，最佳環境仲可以更好咩。然後油業恐慌出現、倒退發生，我最後還是被裁員。但由於我係人力訓練一環，我被轉到Dallas嘅公共運輸系統工作。最後把我帶到台灣。
