The Exchange of Love | My Recent Sermon on Matthew 27:11-26 | ep. 31
In this sermon, which I recently delivered at Cowboy Church in Alexandria, I discuss the exchange of Jesus for Barabbas during the Passover feast. I begin by giving a brief contextual summary of Matthew 26 leading up to this event, which occurs in Matthew 27, where I share a verse-by-verse exegesis, and I end the message with some important applications and the symbolic nature of the passage in terms of the Gospel.

Using a Science Experiment to Present the Gospel (pH Color Change) | ep. 30
In this episode, I perform a simple pH color changing experiment to symbolize the beautiful picture of the Gospel. If you are listening over the podcast format, you will not be able to see the glass, but it starts clears, becomes pink, and then becomes clear again in the end. How we went from sinless in the garden, to sinful and deserving of eternal damnation, to how we inherit the righteousness of Jesus Christ by grace through faith. It is so wonderful to see how Christ supplies us with HIs righteousness and holiness, and how He died for us...

Escaping KJV Onlyism & the NIFB Church: A Sanctifying Journey | Part 1 | SFR ep. 29
In this episode, I sit down with my good friend Shepard Merritt to discuss his experience with the New Independent Fundamentalist Baptist (NIFB) Church as well as with the Church's insistence on using only the King James Version of the Bible. It's not merely that the church teaches you should use the KJV, but it also teaches that other versions are demonic and attempting to deceive people with false teachings. Shepard describes how he got pulled in by the church's teachings on Faith Alone, Scripture Alone, and Grace Alone, but how the doctrine of Scripture Alone was twisted to...

We also look at some of the parallels between John 6 and John 10, that in both scenarios, we see that the Father gives the elect to the Son, just in John 10 we see that the elect are described as Sheep. In this episode, I first respond to a Reddit troll who completely misunderstood my article on the correlation between obedience and our love for God/success for the Kingdom. Next, I look at Calvin's commentary of John 6:38-39, as well as Ephesians 1:1-12, to see if individuals are predestined (adopted) by God, or if simply the process (or plan) of salvation was predestined by God. One of the most convincing aspects of John 6, in terms of predestination and election referring to individuals, is the word "everyone". If everyone given to the Son is raised...

In this episode of the Coffee With John Calvin podcast, we discuss Calvin's view that faith is a gift from God, and that faith is not sourced from the will of fallen creatures, but is sourced only from God. It is a super interesting discussion. The idea that faith is a gift from God is supported in other areas of Scripture, as John Piper also argues, as we will see once we get further into this episode. Thomas Aquinas on John 6:35-44 | Drawn by the Father - Part 1 | ep. 005
In this episode, I explain how irresistible grace is a doctrine that arises by a careful study of John 6:35-44. I also look to Thomas Aquinas’ commentary on the part of the passage where Christ says that of that given to Him He loses nothing, and how he attempts to reconcile that with John 17:12, where Christ says that none have been lost except the son of perdition. Aquinas has two categories for those who place their faith in Christ, and I believe that is where he and Calvin (and myself) diverge on this issue. There are those justified by grace th...

In this episode, we explore the difference in the mind set on the flesh vs. the mind set on the Spirit. It appears clear that Calvin taught that outside of God’s grace through regeneration, all we do is evil. And this makes sense, if we could actually do things that are spiritually fruitful without the Spirit of God in our lives, if we could actually do what is pleasing to God without God working through us, then we wouldn’t actually be dead in our sins. We would be partially alive, spiritually speaking, and that is not at all...

Balancing Truth & Love in Christian Apologetics | SFR ep. 24
In this episode, I explain the importance of presenting Christian apologetic material with truth and love, not one or the other. If we have not love, we are nothing, but if we have not truth, then we can't be anything regardless. We must balance truth and love, with a hope for all unbelievers' salvation. We cannot compromise truth to avoid offending others, but we shouldn't engage with nonbelievers in a manner that is needlessly offensive and confrontational.
