「長崎の郵便配達」
はじまりは1冊の本だった。著者はピーター・タウンゼンド氏。戦時中、英空軍のパイロットとして英雄となり、退官後はイギリス王室に仕え、マーガレット王女と恋に落ちるも周囲の猛反対で破局。この世紀の悲恋は世界中で話題となり、映画『ローマの休日』のモチーフになったともいわれる。その後、世界を回り、ジャーナリストとなった彼が、日本の長崎で出会ったのが、16歳で郵便配達の途中に被爆した谷口稜曄（スミテル）さんだった。生涯をかけて核廃絶を世界に訴え続けた谷口さんをタウンゼンド氏は取材し、1984年にノンフィクション小説「THE POSTMAN OF NAGASAKI」を出版する。 映画『長崎の郵便配達』は、タウンゼンド氏の娘であり、女優のイザベル・タウンゼンドさんが、父親の著書を頼りに長崎でその足跡をたどり、父と谷口さんの想いをひもといていく物語だ。2018年8月、長崎。イザベルさんは本をなぞり、 時に父のボイスメモに耳を傾けながら、スミテル少年が毎日歩いた階段や神社、そして被爆した周辺などを訪ね歩く。また、長崎のお盆の伝統行事、精霊流しでは谷口さん家族と一緒に船を曳いた。旅の終わりに彼女が見る景色とは――。
川瀬監督は、谷口さんより出版についての相談を受け、ニューヨークでの講演を聞いたり、父の意志を受け継ぎたいと願うイザベルさんと出会ったことで、映画の制作を決心した。「核兵器」という言葉がリアルに響く今この時こそ、平和の願いを誰かに“配達”してほしい。父から娘へのメッセージは、今、あなたの元へと届きます。
