A look at the role of research in developing the work of Ofsted as 'an intelligent inspectorate'. In this seminar Professor Daniel Muijs will look at the role of research in developing the work of Ofsted as 'an intelligent inspectorate', including looking at the way research is done as a co-construction between researchers and inspectors at Ofsted, and at the role of research and evaluation as part of organisational strategy. Podagogy – Season 2, Episode 10 - Judging teaching with professor Daniel Muijs
“It is dangerous to say there is one particular method that will work in any classroom in any school,” warns professor Daniel Muijs, head of research at Ofsted. The former University of Southampton academic explains that education research is incredibly “complex” and judging teacher or school effectiveness is therefore also difficult. “The research suggests you need a holistic approach to assessing teacher effectiveness so you do not rely on any single measure,” he says. “You could never attribute the attainment of pupils purely to what the teacher does.” Neither, he says, can you rely on added-va...

IOE insights
What if… we really wanted evidence-informed practice in the classroom?
IOE Public Debates: There’s been a big push to get classroom practice shaped by evidence of ‘what works’. This has been largely inspired by advances in healthcare, where the use of research trials and national guidelines to improve patient care and outcomes is more established. But this approach has not gone uncontested in education (or health) and ‘evidence-informed practice’ is still to be firmly embedded across all schools. Why is this, and do we even have a shared understanding of what we’re aiming for when it comes to teachers’ engagement with and use of research? Speakers include: * Daniel Muijs, Head of...

Social and emotional early development: A programme to develop children’s social skills and help prevent bullying
Daniel Muijs, Professor of Education at the University of Southampton, gives a talk for the Department of Education public seminar series. While dealing with bullying when it occurs in schools is extremely important, we are increasingly finding that prevention is better than cure. Ensuring that schools create a culture in which all pupils develop empathy and social skills, especially among so-called ‘bystanders’ (those pupils who are neither the bully or the bullied but whose behaviour can strongly influence both) may therefore help to prevent future bullying behaviours. The Social and Emotional Early Development (SEED) programme was developed as an intervention to i...
