Moral Minority
Nota Bene: The Moral Passion of David Foster Wallace's The Pale King with Hannah Smart Episode
David Foster Wallace, the loquacious novelist behind Infinite Jest, seemingly predicted much of our culture moment from AI avatars to the hypnotic and addictive temptation of the infinite scroll. In his fiction and essays, he agonized over the ways in which advertisers and mass media have coopted techniques of subversion and rebellion like irony to make products that are more entertaining, more flattering to our egos, and more difficult to ply ourselves away from. As a writer of dizzingly erudite, complexly structured, yet morally earnest fiction he was concerned with devising new imaginative ways of competing with our short-circuited...

Your Mind is an Excellent Servant, but a Terrible Master - David Foster Wallace David Foster Wallace (February 21, 1962 – September 12, 2008) was an American writer and university professor in the disciplines of English and creative writing. This speech is from his graduation address at Kenyon College in 2005.The most profound ideas are the most difficult to articulate because they express thoughts that transcend words. Many of us struggle through life because we are stuck in our "default setting", where we unconsciously see ourselves as the absolute center of the universe. #722 This Is Water by David Foster Wallace
Title: This is Water Author: David Foster Wallace Today we are going through another article on another book by nateliason.com. A really interesting book, also considering the backstory of the author, his story. It starts with something funny, I guess the book in general is also not always too serious but it gets serious as well. Serious about topics and thoughts and things that are interesting and valuable to talk and think about. I hope you like this short little piece. ————————————————————— 🎧The Podcast (Apple Podcast, Spotify, Stitcher..) ————————————————————— https://www.anchor.fm/selfdevelopment_wt/ https://www.youtube.com/channel...

Very Bad Wizards
The Fraudulence Paradox (David Foster Wallace's "Good Old Neon")
Our whole lives we've been frauds. We're not exaggerating. Pretty much all we've ever done is try to create a certain impression of us in other people. Mostly to be liked or admired. This episode is a perfect example, Tamler pretending to be a cinephile (check out his four favorite pieces of 2019 "pop culture" in the first segment), David trying to connect with the people (Baby Yoda, Keanu Reeves etc.) – and of course what could be more fraudulent than a deep dive into a David Foster Wallace story, rhapsodizing over the endless sentences, the logical paradoxes, the seven-layer bean-dip of...

D.T. Max, "Angels of Death: David Foster Wallace and the Battle against Irony, Letterman and Leyner"
D.T. Max, staff writer at the New Yorker, looks at David Foster Wallace and irony, with an eye especially on his 1990's attacks on David Letterman and the novelist Mark Leyner, both in publications and in private correspondence.
