Deep Dive into Foxe's Book of Martyrs by John Foxe - An Account of the Life, Sufferings, and Death of Mr. George Wishart, Who Was Strangled and Afterward Burned, in Scotland, for Professing the...
In 16th-century Scotland, religious beliefs differing from the established Roman Catholic Church led to significant persecution and martyrdom, largely instigated by the Catholic hierarchy, particularly Cardinal David Beaton. Individuals were accused of "heresy" for a range of reasons, from preaching the "truth of the Gospel" and refusing to recant their beliefs, to seemingly minor transgressions.Accusations included actions perceived as mocking religious figures or symbols, such as decorating a house carving to resemble the papal tiara in perceived mockery of the cardinal's cap, or defacing an image of a saint. More often, people were condemned for not...

Reformed Thinking
Deep Dive into Foxe's Book of Martyrs by John Foxe - An Account of the Persecutions in Scotland During the Reign of
Early Protestantism in Scotland saw numerous individuals face severe persecution for their beliefs. Patrick Hamilton, influenced by Luther and Melancthon, was one of the first to be martyred for publicly rejecting Catholic doctrines like pilgrimages and purgatory. The Catholic clergy, particularly the Archbishop of St. Andrews (Cardinal Beaton), actively sought to suppress the burgeoning Protestant movement, leading to the arrest, trial, and execution of many deemed heretics.Accusations against Protestants ranged from disapproving of Catholic rituals to embracing Protestant theology. Some were condemned for seemingly minor offenses interpreted as disrespect towards the Church. The methods of execution...

1 Samuel: The King is Dead, Long Live the King - 1 Samuel 29-31
This week at St John’s Wishart, we wrapped up our In Search of a King series by diving into the final chapters of 1 Samuel (27–31). From David’s tangled journey among the Philistines to Saul’s tragic death, we see humanity’s messiness on full display. Yet, through the chaos, one truth shines: our only hope is Jesus, the eternal King in the line of David. Join us as we explore God’s sovereignty to judge and save, finding rest and assurance in Christ—the King who never fails, never leaves, and reigns forever.

1 Samuel: The Patience of David - 1 Samuel 24
This is our ninth sermon in our series in 1 Samuel. David, pursued by Saul, has an opportunity to take revenge but chooses restraint, trusting in God’s sovereignty to judge and save. Despite the injustice he faces, David's faith points us to Jesus, the ultimate King, who entrusted Himself to the Father’s perfect justice. Join us as we reflect on what it means to trust in God’s timing, rest in His care, and live as people marked by forgiveness, patience, and hope in the second coming of Christ.

1 Samuel: The Anger of Saul - 1 Samuel 18-20
In this sermon from our series In Search of a King, we explore The Anger of Saul from 1 Samuel 18-19. As Saul's jealousy of David spirals into rage and murderous intent, we witness contrasting responses to God's anointed. While Jonathan displays sacrificial love and loyalty, Saul’s insecurity leads to destructive plots. Through it all, God’s protection over David points us to Jesus, the ultimate anointed King, who endured opposition to secure our eternal relationship with Him. Join us as we uncover timeless truths about trusting God amidst trials and living securely in His unshakable promises. Preacher: Michael Calder
