In this (mostly) spoiler-free* episode, Neha and Shruti reflect on the experience of reading books from around the world. We zoom out and talk on a broad level about narrative voice, villainy, disability representation and its portrayal in literature, and post-colonial writing. We also do a deep dive into trauma narratives - why are they so popular nowadays? What stories are being promoted, and how does this limit the stories being told by authors of color? We had so much to say on these topics, that we just couldn't get to all of it in the...

Deepa Anappara
Deepa Anappara's novel Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line was one of the most hotly anticipated debuts of the year. Set in a slum on the outskirts of an unnamed Indian city, it centres on nine year old, cop-show obsessed Jai and his two best friends, who go looking for local children who’ve gone missing. It has won rave reviews from critics and high praise from Ian McEwan who described it as ‘brilliant’. Not that Deepa is aware of this - she told me she was too nervous to read any of the reviews. Perhaps this has to do wit...

After last week’s episode where Jonathan and Gary discussed their favourite books from 2019, this time they talk about books they're looking forward to in 2020 (a few of which, in fairness, they’ve already seen or in Jonathan’s case even edited).
