今年的12月17日是美国废除《排华法案》（The Chinese Exclusion Act）的80周年纪念日。1882年5月6日，美国时任总统切斯特·阿瑟（Chester A. Arthur）签署了一项法律，首次明确将一个特定的族群—— “华人”——列为不受欢迎的群体，从此开启了长达60余年（1882-1943）的排华时期。100年前，加拿大政府在美国和国内反华势力的推动下，也通过了与美国类似的《华人移民法案》（1923-1947）。
由于美国对特定身份的华人给予了入境豁免权，因此在排华时期对华人移民进行筛选变得尤为重要。其中身体审查，尤其此时中国部分女性的身体特征——缠足，受到美国移民官的格外关注，被广泛运用于针对华人商人、劳工、学生和美国土生华人的审讯。本期我们邀请何芳老师，从历史的发展脉络，梳理华人移民北美的历史，并从针对华人移民的身体审查切入，从中解读美国移民审查标准的形成过程和内在逻辑，以及排华法案废除后华人地位和形象在美国经历的变迁，重新审视了美国的种族、阶级和社会性别观念，折射了美国对自身国界的想象、文化的塑造，以及国家身份的认同与定位，希望能为大家思考当今的移民政策和华人社区现状提供历史参考。
