O Little Town Of Bethlehem (Hymns That I Love - Christmas Edition)
Send a textThis is a special "Christmas Edition" of the Hymns That I Love series. This episode features the hymn O Little Town Of Bethlehem. Written and published in the 1860s, there is a rich history to this song...a history that begins with a visit to the Holy Land for a Christmas Eve service. Pastor Phillips Brooks and his organist, Lewis Redner, collaborated to combine lyrics and melody. The song was originally used as a children's choir piece for a Christmas Eve service. Little did Brooks and Redner know, hundreds of years later the song would...

Rock Of Ages (Hymns That I Love)
Send a textThe beloved hymn Rock Of Ages by Augustus M. Toplady was published in the late 1700s and came out of England. The hymn itself is still popular and sung worldwide, all these years later. While the hymn is well-known, some of the backstory and context surrounding Mr. Toplady is not. Toplady and evangelist John Wesley had a very public feud over something that is still being debated today: Calvinism vs. Arminianism. Toplady as a Calvinist had strong disagreements with Wesley's views and how much Wesley was influencing the Church of England. Today's podcast goes into t...

Responding To Hatred
Send a textI have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. John 16:33In recent weeks and months, a thread through many news events and stories seems to be violence and hatred against Christians (whether in the US or other parts of the world). This hatred has escalated to a point in which we must not only be aware of it but also prepared to deal with it in practical, Biblical ways. Today's episode dives int...

Send a textAfter this summer's sabbatical and break from AS BOLD AS LIONS content, Derek is back with a new episode taking us into the fall. Into this season, God is saying "It is time to go back to school." This is timely and a reminder that in life, we need God's Word and truth daily. We need to be students of Scripture, approaching it with humility and able to teach others. When we have a love for the Word like David had, we find that it causes us to want to see the truth untarnished and...

What About False Gospels? (THIS GREAT GOSPEL)

I'll agree that the word prefix doesn't seem all that powerful, but does it impact how the individuals act in those relationships? On the one hand, we consider it a mere technicality... a lack of a biological connection. On the other hand, treating someone like a stepchild has been a dismissive insult (or assault) for as long as I can remember. In this episode, James and I s...

Ready For Action (LIVING BEHIND ENEMY LINES)
Send a textThe final episode in this 3-part Living Behind Enemy Lines series, "Ready For Action" means focusing on the practical things we can do while being exiles under the rule of pagan authorities. Often our preaching over the years has focused less and less on telling people how to actually live in Christ. We hesitate to talk about a list of "do's and dont's" because we seek not to offend. But the outworkings of faith must be evident. This episode focuses on some of those actions. How do we live and raise our children? What do we s...

Realize The Call (LIVING BEHIND ENEMY LINES)
Send a textAfter defining what the battle looks like (Recognize The Battle - Part 1 of LIVING BEHIND ENEMY LINES), we next have to step out and look at action steps on our part. Christians must always keep the Gospel front and center in our lives -- in our interactions and conversations. We must unified around a common set of beliefs, majoring on the majors and minoring on the minors. Finally, we must keep our "antennae" up as we go throughout each day. Where are the opportunities to insert the love of Christ and the Gospel message? Are w...

This is what protection really looks like. As men we are often challenged to protect our families from harm in all forms, but what does that really look like in the average relationship? Sometimes we don't want to be the voice of reason. Sometimes we just need a reason...I digress. This conversation was inspired by the 2022 Oscars, but we don't say their names. Honestly, the event that trended worldwide sparked a different conversation with me and the guys. We take inventory of what we will and won't do for our families when it comes to protecting them.

An "attitude of gratitude" is not something we naturally have within us. From there, he and the other disciples scatter. In 3 day's time however, Jesus is raised and He goes on to appear to the disciples, including Peter. He makes a point to address Peter and asks him...

The characters are outcasts, living on the fringe because of their love of rebetiko — often called “Greek blues” — and treated as immoral influences. Prudhomme uses the music and the lifestyle as a structuring device for his narrative. The Two Guys then turn to Pa...
